This is main site, not forum, but wasn’t sure where else to put it, @Joe.

I’ve been having great problems accessing the main History page over the past couple of weeks, getting this message

Request Timeout

This request takes too long to process, it is timed out by the server. If it should not be timed out, please contact administrator of this web site to increase ‘Connection Timeout’.

nearly every time.

I’m not having problems accessing any other part of the main site, just the History main page, and can access the articles via Google as I’m usually able to make a precise enough search to find the article I’m looking for.

So, generally, I’m still finding what I’m looking for, but by an annoying roundabout way.

I’m sorry @Ron Nasty, I know you’ve complained about that page taking too long to load before. It’s unfortunate if it’s timing out.

I’m not sure what I can do to improve it, but I have a potential solution. As a bit of background information, as you may know this site runs off a database, and the history section contains a list of every post in the database (ie every date-specific entry; there are also pages, which include song and album features etc, which aren’t included in the list).

There are over 3,000 of these posts, and every time you access the history page it generates the list on the fly, to give you the most up-to-date version. There’s probably quite a lot of server crunching that needs to be done to compile the list.

Now, that’s only the case for logged-in users (if you log in to the forum you’re essentially logged in to the entire site). If you have an account here, you get a non-cached version of every page, which has all the latest entries, comments etc in the sidebar. If you’re not logged in you’d get a cached version which is slightly out of date but should load slightly faster. The cache expires after every hour, I think.

In the past I cached the posts and pages for registered users too, but received complaints from people here that things weren’t updating often enough, so that’s why it’s different. I should add that the forum is never cached, and each page here is generated anew with every request, for logged-in and non-registered visitors.

Since you’re likely to be logged in almost always, the best way to get to the cached version of the history page is to load it in an incognito window (in Chrome), or whatever the equivalent is in your preferred browser, without being logged in. Alternatively, use a different browser for that page without logging in. It should load quicker and not time out, because it’s been pre-loaded. Let me know if it helps.

I should add that I’m almost always logged in, and I’ve not seen that page time out in a long time. I assume the speed of your internet connection has an effect too – fortunately I tend to have a fairly high-speed connection most of the time.

@Joe I only ever log in to post, so in most instances I am not logged in most of the time I try to access the page.

I may have made this suggestion before, but would it make a difference if you broke it up and put the links under sub-headings, either by year or period (say, “pre-1960”, “1960-1970”, “post-1970”)?

You’re probably right that it’s to do with the amount of links, and those links can only increase. By sectioning the links, might that not help speed up loading time (I only noticed a couple of hours ago that Poker Man had started a thread because he was having the exact same problems. Maybe it’s reaching a point where it’s becoming difficult for those, like me, who don’t have the best high-speed access. My own access is a mobile laptop dongle.)

Sub-headings or sections wouldn’t make a difference, because the list would still need to be compiled from the database. The only way it could be speeded up is if it wasn’t automated, ie I add a new line to the list each time I write a post. It’s possible, though it’d require more work from me.

Okay, just thinking of ways, as the amount of links does seem to be starting to create problems for some, how about splitting it into History Part I (up to 1971) and History Part II (1971 onwards)? Cut it into two separate parts and then Part I doesn’t have to worry about the links in Part II and vice versa.

I don’t think you understand what I’m saying here. That page is automated – I can’t control the lists or split them. It’s all or nothing. As I said in my last post, if I start curating the list I’m getting into manually updating it which would mean more work for me.

Here’s the list of everything, which is copied and pasted from the source code. It won’t update with future additions, but should load slightly faster as it’s not compiling it from the database each time. If you bookmark this comment you can make use of it again. The numbers in brackets signify the number of entries for each month or comments on each page.

@Joe, at the end of the first bullet point on the homepage, would it be a good idea to link to your post above and put a note that people with slower connections might benefit from using the links in the post?

I’d rather not, because the list above won’t get updated. It’s purely for @Ron Nasty’s benefit. At some point I’ll add more entries, particularly for the 70s, and they’ll only be listed on /history.

A spoiler tag wouldn’t help this page load quicker – it just hides it with (I think) JavaScript. People can scroll past easily enough, and once we’re on page 72+ of this thread it’ll probably be forgotten about.

71 pages. There’s a lot of weirdness about this forum. @Zig’s Scooby Doo pics weren’t wrong…

I don’t believe so. I don’t think it lets anyone unthank a post once it’s thanked.

I wish we could since if you made a mistake in a post, you can go edit it. If you make a double post or a post you didn’t mean to make, you just flag a mod and they take care of it. If you thank a post you don’t want to, then it’s stuck.
