The Beatles’ second BBC radio appearance of the day was at the Playhouse Theatre, London, where they appeared on the popular and influential show Saturday Club, hosted by Brian Matthew.
They began rehearsing for their appearance from 2.30pm, and from 4-5pm recorded a five-song session. The Beatles performed ‘Some Other Guy’, ‘Love Me Do’, ‘Please Please Me’, ‘Keep Your Hands Off My Baby’ and Beautiful Dreamer.
The two-hour programme was broadcast on 26 January at 10am on the BBC Light Programme.
This was The Beatles’ first appearance at the Playhouse Theatre, on Northumberland Avenue, London. In all they recorded 13 sessions at the theatre – more than at any other location – between this day and 7 January 1964.

It’s a shame that a copy the studio version of “Some Other Guy” recorded on this day hasn’t been found in better sound quality.
If I had a time machine, I’d go back to 1962/63 with high-end Hi-Fi equipment & make good, quality recordings of all these early BBC broadcasts. Then I’d shoot over to Nov/Dec ‘62 & do the same thing with the last 2 Star-Club engagements… Maybe pick up a couple of Cavern shows also.
Then it would be back to 1954/55 to record Elvis Presley’s broadcasts over KWKH Radio’s “Louisiana Hayride”. His early broadcasts also contained a number of songs that he never commercially recorded or released, & the ones that currently exist are in even worse sound quality than the early BBC recordings. Just a pipe dream…
