John Lennon’s murderer has been denied parole for a seventh time, New York State’s Department of Corrections has announced.
Mark Chapman, 57, shot and killed John Lennon, 40, in New York City on the night of 8 December 1980. He was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.
He has been given a parole hearing every two years since 2000 and has been turned down each time. The transcript of this latest hearing, before a three-member board on Wednesday 22 August 2012, has not yet been released. The board members were Sally Thompson, Joseph Crangle and Marc Coppola.
Despite your positive efforts while incarcerated, your release at this time would greatly undermine respect for the law and tend to trivialise the tragic loss of life which you caused as a result of this heinous, unprovoked, violent, cold and calculated crime. The panel notes your good conduct, program achievements, educational accomplishments, positive presentation, remorse, risk and needs assessment, letters of support, significant opposition to your release and all other statutory factors were considered. However, parole shall not be granted for good conduct and program completions alone.
Chapman will be eligible for another parole hearing in two years’ time.
In May Chapman was transferred from the Attica Correctional Facility in western New York to the nearby Wende Correctional Facility in the town of Alden in Erie County, New York. Both are maximum security buildings.
He is kept in a single-person cell, according to corrections spokeswoman Carole Claren-Weaver, and is allowed out three hours per day. According to corrections officials he has been held in protective custody with a good disciplinary record.
Earlier this week Chapman was granted a request to be allowed conjugal visits with his wife Gloria Hiroko Chapman, whom he married in 1979.
He had applied to the ‘family reunion’ program while an inmate at Attica, but had to reapply after being transferred to Wende. The program allows Chapman to be allowed to spend up to 48 hours with his wife on prison grounds, in a trailer which has a kitchenette, living room and two bedrooms, but no cameras or guards.

His wife must be pretty messed up to still be married to that psycho. Not only is she married to a cold-blooded killer, but she’s married to someone she hasn’t been with in 31 years.
I am glad that the word murderer is used so it’s clear this was a murder and not an assination like JFK, RFK etc. Not to diminish the pain of the Kennedys but they knew the dangers of higher public office. John was going home to see his son. I don’t understand how you can meet Sean who was 5 years old, meet John Lennon and him be extremely generous and kind to you and then you shoot him in the back like a coward. He should rot in prison until death not because he killed a Beatle but because he took the father of two young boys away and made Yoko watch it.
He’s likely to apply again this very month, august 2016. I hate prisons of any kind, but His case is too special to be regarded lightly, he hurt me deeply by killing John Lennon, I have no forgiveness for him, even though time has passed, pain is still vivid.
He (it) will never feel the sheer magnitude of pain caused. Generations have cried for John. Future generations will cry. He gets to spend two days of fun with his “wife” (thing). Makes me sick.
No life is worth more than another, but I think if a certain life ending will cause millions to suffer the murderer should be treated so. Some may say that opinion is illegal and unethical, but I can’t remove the anger and sadness I feel and see so many feel. Especially on John’s birthday and the horrible day in December.
Love or hate Yoko, no one should see what she saw. I hope Julian and Sean will always be close on some level. It’s really the only peace some of us have.
He’s not worthy to be set free and deserve to die in prison many generations have passed since the day he killed JL but still in our hearts couldn’t accept what he has done.
