Peter And Gordon released a single, Woman, on this day in the United Kingdom. It was written by Paul McCartney under the pseudonym Bernard Webb, and was issued as Columbia DB7834.
The pseudonym was used as McCartney wished to see if he could have a hit single without relying on the strength of his reputation. The venture was not a success, as the single stalled at number 28 on the British charts. In the United States it fared slightly better following its 10 January release, peaking at number 14.
Peter Asher was the brother of Jane Asher, who was McCartney’s girlfriend at the time.
