This was the Quarrymen’s fifth performance at Mona Best’s Casbah Coffee Club, a members-only venue in Liverpool’s Hayman’s Green.
The group had been booked by Best to perform a Saturday night residency at the club, which accommodated around 300 fans. The Quarrymen played at the Casbah on seven occasions – the other dates were 29 August; 5, 12 and 19 September; and 3 and 10 October 1959. The Beatles played the venue a further 37 times: 17 and 31 December 1960; 15 and 29 January; 12, 19 and 26 February; 5, 12, 19 and 26 March; 6, 13 and 27 August; 10 and 24 September; 22 October; 19 and 24 November; 3 and 17 December 1961; 7, 14, 21 and 28 January; 4, 11, 18 and 25 February; 4, 11, 18 and 25 March; 1, 7 and 8 April; and 24 June 1962.
