The Beatles live: Cavern Club, Liverpool (evening)

An all-night session took place on this date at the Cavern Club on Mathew Street, Liverpool.

The Beatles shared a bill with a number of acts including renowned jazz trumpeter Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen.

I remember The Beatles doing the interval for us at the Cavern and I had never seen guys in all-leather suits before. It can’t have been much fun for them as it was very damp down there. The fellers liked us and the girls liked them and I thought there must be something wrong with us.

Not all the audience members were so enamoured by The Beatles, however.

This was an all-nighter with Kenny Ball and various jazz bands, but The Beatles and the Remo Four were also on the bill. At about one o’clock in the morning, the Mike Cotton jazz band finished and we heard a rock band tune up. It sounded horrible, loud guitars and heavy drums, and so we left quickly. We got a pass-out and went to the Pier Head for a pie and a cup of tea. We thought we would wait until this bloody lot had finished. When we went back, we found that they had gone and Kenny Ball was about to go on, and he was great.

This was The Beatles’ seventh night-time performance at the Cavern, and their 29th overall. Their final performance at the venue took place on 3 August 1963.
