The one song I can think of that I love with all my heart is In Spite Of All The Danger . It’s so sad that they never re-recored it.

All versions of Not Guilty come from the same one take, they are just different mixes and/or edits (Anthology 3 having the worst by far, it is ghastly). Helter Skelter is from Take 2 not the legendary 27 minute Take 3.
I agree with what you are saying about the Anthology series, a better selection of what was included plus how they were presented; my biggest gripe is all the edits and cut and paste jobs. Two of Us is very similar to the released track as is Let It Be so why not give us something different like a couple of other takes from the Get Back rehearsals: Kansas City /Miss Ann/Lawdy Miss Clawdy is a fun jam, if they want to include Two of Us give us the fast rocking version recorded on the 10th January – wait we can’t have anything from Twickenham included.
Getting back on topic very slighty i’ve have loved to have a live version of Leave My Kitten Alone with Paul and George doing the backing vocals which aren’t on the studio outtake, they remind of Shout (the Anthology Shout edit is another piece of useless garbage). The Beatles rocking that would be quite something.

Yeah, I’d LOVE to hear the full electric version of Two Of Us . That might be number 1 on my wish list for the never coming (nor should it) Anthology 4
I would have liked a studio version of That’ll Be The Day. Not Guilty , Come And Get It , and especially All Things Must Pass should absolutely have been on an album. Let It Be only has 12 tracks, and two of them are less than a minute long. Why couldn’t they put those 3 on it?

I lost My Little Girl would have been a cool inclusion considering its a decent performance and its one of the earliest songs Paul wrote, its got greater merit than a loose run-through of Mailman, Bring Me No More Blues (again edited).
House of the Rising Sun not so much (so deliberately bad its brilliant).
There is more than enough material to compile a Get back compilation.
Personally i’d have The Honeymoon Song instead of A Taste Of Honey . I know, THS is on Live At The BBC , anyone know how to get this back on topic?

Bad to Me from The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 is really catchy. With a little work, it would have been nice on A Hard Day’s Night or Beatles For Sale .

Perhaps George Martin is to fault for a lot of what was presented, listen to his response during this Dutch TV Interview when being asked specifically about the “legendary” ‘Helter Skelter ‘ take at 6.15 of the video:
His response of wanting to appease the masses as opposed to catering to “Beatles fanatics” about sums up the selection process for the discs, which I suppose you can appreciate since they are into the business of making money. George Martin listens with a very technical ear and I’m not convinced that the take would be as “boring” as he suggests that it is, a 27-minute Beatle jam boring!? Perhaps many of us fantasize unrealistically about how good it might sound and maybe it’s best left a “legend”, but still, I’d LOVE to hear it!…:-)

Both of those are on the bootleg I have. (It also has “No Pakistanis,” an early “Mama You’ve Been On My Mind” and “Watching Rainbows.”) Some of the bootlegged stuff is better than what made Let It Be , including the early versions of “Bathroom Window” with Paul joking “Tuesday calling… looking for Paul… Tuesday calling…”

Despite the reputation the Get Back rehearsals have there are a lot of fun moments and some really good jams and songs. Watching Rainbows (as mentioned previously) is arguably their best jam, You Really Got A Hold On Me (as featured in the film), the Cannonball/Not Fade Away/Hey Little Girl (In The High School Sweater)/Bo Diddley medley is a good listen, Because I Know You Love Me So (buried in the Fly On The Wall disc), there is a great version of One After 909 where John messes the words up, resulting in chaos, and a decent attempt at All Things Must Pass (Paul and John aren’t that into it but its good enough).
None of it is up there with Hey Jude or Strawberry Fields but they would be a cool bonus disc to one of the rejected Get Back Album’s. To avoid people moaning about what they are put it into a box with the Let It Be DVD and price it sensibly (ie not £59.99).
Apple have so many options in their vaults for future releases yet they come across as either incompetent, lazy or just unwilling. The last thing we should be getting in the 50 years celebrations is another damn compilation of tracks we already have – no scratch that, the last thing we should be getting is the planned US Albums revised to suit Apple’s mood. They must work so bloody hard to get it all done so damn slowly and then so wrong.
And now i’m light years away from the topic and would need a Dimension Transporter to get back to it.

I love the medleys from the ‘Get Back ‘ sessions, atleast they did give us the ‘Rip It Up/Shake, Rattle And Roll/Blue Suede Shoes’ gem on the ‘Anthology 3 ‘, have you heard the ‘Black Dog Blues/Right String, Wrong Yo Yo/Run For Life’ one? That one’s excellent, all four of them sound like they’re really into it, George even sings one of the verses. Perhaps the number of medleys evident from these sessions contributed to the inspiration for the ‘Abbey Road ‘ medley constructed a few months later, John’s “shoot me” lyric from ‘Watching Rainbows’ also resurfaces during ‘Come Together ‘.

Perhaps because of the changing Copyright laws being the reason for the recent iTunes Bootleg recordings seeing the light of day, we may just finally see some of these passed over nuggets getting the same treatment over the next 5 years. Another recording high on my own personal wishlist, which I’m not even sure if one actually exists, would be a live version of ‘We Can Work It Out ‘ which The Beatles did include in their set during a brief tour of Britain in late 1965, according to Nicholas Schaffner’s ‘Beatles Forever’ book. Apple would be well advised to start releasing these recordings soon, for their chief demographic buying them would be the older Beatles fans who aren’t getting any younger, but they appear to be more focused on reissuing and re-releasing material designated to attract yet another generation instead…:-)

There is rumoured to be a recording of one of the live concerts from the ’65 UK Tour in existance, if it exists who knows who has it, what quality its in or whether or if we will ever see it. A few odds and ends have been cropping up recently (e.g. the complete Cavern Club Kansas City , I’ll Follow The Sun demo from 1964, a longer She’s A Woman outtake) so maybe.
Yeah the Right String Wrong Yo-Yo medley is pretty cool, as is the Blue Suede Shoes one they did (again for some incredibly stupid reason Apple cut it up and pissed all over it before including it on Anthology 3 ). I also like the Cannonball/Not Fade Away/Hey Little Girl (In The High School Sweater)/Bo Diddley medley from the 29th January. I doubt Apple have the brains or self-control to not cut and paste these medleys into pointless edits. There is a fun All Together Now where John, obviously bored, replaces the original lyrics with things like “piece your nose”. Its fun if you let yourself accept it as fun and not that it isn’t brilliance personified and going to rival Yesterday – but more than likely these kind of things would be shot down and derided within seconds of an announcement of intention of release.

The recording quality would have to be pretty bad for Beatles fans to complain about it, most have become accustomed to living with the poor audio, especially when it comes to the live recordings which were never recorded under ideal circumstances. Paul asked Tony Barrow (Beatles’ Press Agent) to record their final show at Candlestick Park on his handheld tape recorder, which he did and it’s very listenable, in fact, it may very well be my most listened to live Beatles recording despite the inferior audio. Whether or not it’s because The Beatles knew that it was their last live show and put a little more into it or not, the performances here are noticeably superior to the Tokyo shows which were far better recorded, even ‘Paperback Writer ‘ (which doesn’t sound so good in Japan) sounds pretty fine. One of the “best” things about it is that Tony Barrow ran out of tape before the last song was finished, I say “best” because a lot of beatleggers omitted the last tune from their wares because of this, which made me feel rather fortunate because my copy was one of the ones that kept it in. The last song was ‘Long Tall Sally ‘ which was substituted in for ‘I’m Down ‘ which closed out their other shows on that last tour, it seems kinda fitting to me that the recording abruptly ends, just like the touring did for them that night.
Speaking of poor audio and live gems that Apple passed over, check out this recording of ‘A Picture Of You’ from a 1962 BBC show, that’s dated June 15 which I believe places it before Ringo joined and would feature Pete Best on drums:
Excellent delivery from George, I love the guitar/drum break in the middle, I’m unsure on the origins of the song itself but I do recall hearing a snippet of Joe Brown playing it in a documentary once, this recording is up there amongst my favourite BBC recordings, eventhough it technically sounds like sh*t. I remember George Harrison saying during an ‘Anthology’ Interview (Extras or EPK, I think) “personally, I like a bit of tape hiss” and I’m the same way.
That “longer She’s A Woman outtake” that you mentioned was one that I’d forgot all about and haven’t listened to in years, it’s fabulous and heavy as hell, great audio on the version I have as well…:-)

I would have replaced Mr Moonlight with Leave My Kitten Alone on Beatles For Sale: the latter is better from any points of view.
All Things Must Pass would’ve been great on Abbey Road… but I guess it could have never replaced Maxwell’s Silver Hammer unfortunately.
And if they had worked hard on Step Inside Love, I think it would have turned out brilliant on the White Album (and would Lennon have hated it more than Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da ?)
That said, imho, all the remaining songs were rightly left out.
In Spite of All the Danger is still too weak for a release and would not have fitted the overall mood on Please Please Me .
The same goes for Hello Little Girl , Love Of The Loved and Like Dreamers Do .
That Means a Lot is too weird, unfinished from an harmonic point of view. I agree with MacDonald that “the structure sounds wrong and, at worst, seems completely arbitrary”.
If You’ve Got Trouble is rubbish… the worst thing Lennon and McCartney could ever conceive.
The same goes for What’s The New Mary Jane , c’mon… they did have a reputation to uphold, didn’t they?
Come And Get It is a nice tune and could maybe be issued as a B-side (although Lennon would have probably vetoed it), but it would have been out of place on Abbey Road .
Not Guilty , despite the enormous effort they put into recording it, was not ready for release… it’s bare. With a bit more production it could have been added to the White Album though.

If you’re talking about the White Album jam Brian Epstein Blues, that’s not on Anthology. If you’re not talking about that, what Anthology track are you referring to? And, while I like Brian Epstein Blues, I can’t think of any way (or reason) it should have been on the White Album .

It was a big record for Joe Brown in 1962, and one that he keeps revisiting. This is his version of it written by one of his backing band Pete Oakman, whose story can be read here http://www.peteroakman.com/
The Beatles backed Joe (who was a headliner then) in 1962 “I can remember John Lennon saying that they had just recorded their first single ‘Love Me Do ‘, which was to be released soon”. It became their first hit in 1963. Peter has The Beatles version of ‘A Picture Of You’ – lead vocals by George Harrison ” so probably Ringo on drums for this.
Joe Brown was a huge influence on the next generation. His guitar work for Billy Fury, and other legends guaranteed him a place in the ‘pantheon’
George Harrison and Paul McCartney remained close to Joe over many years

@Billy Rhythm, @bubbles has answered your question on the origins of the song A Picture of You.
Joe mentions it on this page https://www.beatlesbible.com/1…..southport/
Brown was at number three in the UK singles chart at this time with A Picture Of You. It was one of Epstein’s favourite pop songs, and was also part of The Beatles’ own stage act, on which George Harrison took lead vocals.
Thank you for the contribution, @bubbles. I hope you will explore the Beatles Bible and contribute to some other threads and posts.

Not Guilty should’ve replaced Wild Honey Pie , because why have a ditty that lasts less than a minute when you can have a driving 3 minute rocker that does the trick so much better?
Speaking of Anthology songs does anybody here agree that take 1 of I’m Looking Through You should’ve been the definitive version?

I think that take misses the middle 8 and Ringo’s fantastic organ!!!
But I sort of agree in that it sounds nicely clicky. I remember hearing it when they opened Abbey Rd up to visitors for a tour in the 70s and thought it was a wonderful take…….It was my first hearing of versions of ‘Strawberry Fields’ and the acoustic ‘While my Guitar….weeps’ I thought they were too
20 years later we got both…….More to come I hope.
