I see a lot of people say they prefer the Anthology version over the one on George’s George Harrison album. While I like both equally, I also realize that the Beatles version is a very early take and most certainly would have sounded much different had it landed on the White Album . Too bad we never got to hear it.

Offline I don’t think it’s such an early take…they spent a LOT of time working on it and refining it before they left it off of the album, IIRC…

Offline You could be right – I will have to check the notes again that came with the CD’s.
If that is the best they could have done with it, I’d be very surprised. I do like that version, as I stated earlier. But to me, it just doesn’t sound ‘finished’ (polished?).

The released Not Guilty take is 102 and i dont believe it was in the running for inclusion when sequencing the album. The anthology version was edited in the ’80’s for Sessions and i hope it would have been unlikely to have been considered for release in that variation back in 1968 as it sucks.
The only one i would take is Leave My Kitten Alone over Mister Moonlight. I would be happy to leave Not Guilty in the vaults but its closely run with Savoy Truffle . A Get Back Oldies collection wouldnt have been bad but the tracks would have to be unedited and as a bonus disc to Let It Be Naked instead of the utterly pointless 20-odd minute ‘Fly On The Wall’ cd.

Offline It was labeled 102 but it certainly wasn’t the 102nd take…if you read Lewisohn’s book, they skipped LOTS of take numbers on that song. Still, he has them down as having spent an awful lot of time on it for a song that ended up being surplus. At least to my ears, it doesn’t sound unfinished.

No matter what the take number or whether or not it sounds finished, we do agree it’s a cool song.
I still can’t help wondering what the final version would have sounded like on TWA.

Offline I’ve always thought that George’s “You know what to do” would have fit on the albums of its time period. Not that it’s a particularly amazing song but I don’t think it’s worse than a lot of songs in the early part of the Beatles career and I happen to enjoy listening to it.

Offline One After 909 would be a great single in 1963, possibly an EP with some covers, or own compositions like Long Tall Sally could’ve been issued in mid 1963? could’ve happened. Besame Mucho , and How Do You Do It ? may’ve been released as a single, or in the EP with One After 909 .
I’m sure I say what most of us would’ve done is to take out a song from Beatles For Sale , and include Leave My Kitten Alone . Though most say Mr. Moonlight, I would’ve left out Kansas City / Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! (Never a big fan of that song) with mr. Moonlight a tight second for non-inclusion. Maybe a work of George’s You Know What To Do as a single with an outtake from The Beatles For Sale Sessions. We can’t forget What You’re Doing Take 11 (Even though it wasn’t included in the album) I like both versions though.
If You Got Trouble sounded like a great song for Help ! At least give Ringo a lead in a movie. Poor Ringo didn’t have a song to sing in any movie the group acted in. That Means Alot would’ve been a good song to have played in the stonehedge scene. The two outtakes along with Bad Boy , and another song, probably a cover, Wait , or a a quickly penned Harrison or Lennon/McCartney composition should’ve been released as a EP.

Beautiful. This is pretty much what I was going to say (minus the earlier stuff). I think that maybe “Child Of Nature ” could have replaced “Bungalow Bill” on the White Album , but that would have robbed John of a good song later down the road. That’s why I’m glad “All Things Must Pass ” didn’t make the cut for a Beatles album…George’s career might have started off on a very different foot without it.

By all accounts, “You Know What to Do” could’ve ended up being the 14th song on A Hard Day’s Night had Ringo’s tonsil episode not happened.
It’s interesting how much the group had raised its standards from late ’63 to mid-’65. For With The Beatles , they had no problem giving Ringo a throwaway Lennon/McCartney composition (“I Wanna Be Your Man “) for him to sing on his token vocal spot for the album, but by the time Help ! came around, the same practice apparently just didn’t cut it anymore. I don’t think the song is as terrible as most people, but I guess I can see why they ultimately chose to leave it off the album.

Offline I think That Means A Lot is great. Have been loving that one very much lately. But, I always thought this one was written and recorded around their With The Beatles period, and I always thought they could’ve stuck it on there, but I only found out ehh..right now that it’s from 1965.
I don’t think You know what to do really would’ve fit on AHDN , same goes for If You’ve Got Trouble on Help ! even though I do like it.

Offline You Know What To Do is nice enough, but agreed, wouldn’t have fit. Wasn’t that demoed during the No Reply session when Ringo was ill, right before they flew to Oz for the tour? Or is my memory failing me on that one? I’d always thought I Call Your Name was mooted for the 14th track on AHDN , as well?

Offline You Know What To Do was demoed at the same time as No Reply but it was just after Ringo had collapsed in early June ’64. There had been a recording session booked on the same day (3rd June) but due to Ringo’s ill health instead there was a meet, great and rehearsal with Jimmy Nicol and then a few songs were demo’d later on, can’t remember the Paul one.
I think the No Reply demo was for Tommy Quickly but then John kept it or Tommy turned it down and the Beatles recorded it a couple of months later for Beatles For Sale .

Offline “In Spite Of All The Danger ,” “That Means a Lot,” “Not Guilty .”
“All Things Must Pass ” is a trickier question. I don’t think it would’ve been done justice by the bare-bones approach of the Get Back sessions (course, Phil Spector would eventually be brought in to pimp up the songs, but they didn’t know that at the time). It would have been gorgeous on Abbey Road , but it might have stolen a little of “Here Comes The Sun “‘s thunder, maybe? And, as Sunshaderain7 said above, the song was really crucial to George’s solo career starting with a bang. But then again, if John/Paul had been supporting songs like “Not Guilty ” and “ATMP ” in the first place, would the breakup have even been necessary at that time?

Offline Despite the catchy acoustic guitar lead-in that we’ve become so accustomed to on ‘Rubber Soul ‘ being absent, I thought that the ‘Anthology’ version of ‘I’m Looking Through You ‘ was an improvement over the original, but perhaps the original version’s sound was more on par with the other ‘Rubber Soul ‘ tracks. As others have mentioned, ‘Leave My Kitten Alone ‘ is an obvious one that shoulda been put in somewhere, I can’t think of for the life of me why it was discarded in the first place, the only thing that I can think of is that they felt that it was just too heavy for the times, but ‘Bad Boy ‘ & ‘I’m Down ‘ got put out, so why not this one?
I was disappointed with a lot of the ‘Anthology’, mainly because of the selection itself, I all ready had a very good version of ‘Not Guilty ‘ (different take) from a previous Beatleg which goes on for longer and is better, in my opinion, in addition to better takes of ‘All Things Must Pass ‘ among others. I’m particularly not happy with a lot of the editing, especially the “mash ups” like ‘Yes It Is ‘. Another glaring editing disappointment for me was the snippet of ‘Helter Skelter ‘ that we got, I’ve been searching for this legendary 20 minute+ version of ‘Helter Skelter ‘ all my life, and was hoping that the ‘Anthology 3 ‘ would finally answer my prayers, but instead we got a snippet which appears to be the mellower part of The Beatles jamming out.
There’s also other unreleased songs that were overlooked to make way for many songs that we all ready had multiple versions of, such as ‘Ticket To Ride ‘, ‘I Saw Her Standing There ‘, ‘From Me To You ‘, etc. Where’s ‘Sour Milk Sea’, ‘Goodbye’, ‘Black Dog Blues’ or ‘Watching Rainbows’? These were all passed over for ‘Los Paranoias’!? To choose ‘Anthology songs that should have been on original albums’ would be grasping at straws indeed, but perhaps if we’d gotten a better ‘Anthology’ it’d be a different story…:-)
