Recording, mixing: Mull Of Kintyre by Wings

Studio Two, Abbey Road Studios, London
Producer: Paul McCartney
Engineer: Geoff Emerick

Wings finished recording ‘Mull Of Kintyre’ on 3 October 1977.

The backing track had been taped in Scotland on 8 August, with bagpipes and drums recorded the following day. A break then took place, during which the McCartneys’ son James was born on 12 September.

On this day Paul McCartney added lead vocals, more bass and acoustic guitar, and vocal harmonies. He was joined on the latter by Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, and two members of the Alan Parsons Project, Ian Bairnson and David Payton, who were recording elsewhere in Abbey Road.

A film crew from London Weekend Television were also present, to record footage for the opening episode of The South Bank Show. They captured the overdub recordings, as well as a jam version of ‘Lucille’ by Little Richard. The crew returned the following day to interview McCartney.

Towards the end of the session, McCartney oversaw a stereo mix of ‘Mull Of Kintyre’, and acetate discs were cut at Abbey Road to be sent to the members of the Campbeltown Pipe Band. The final mix of the song was made on 5 October.
