Wings began recording ‘Mull Of Kintyre’ on 8 August 1977.
Paul McCartney had started writing the song in the summer of 1974, and completed it with Denny Laine in July 1977. It was always intended to be released as a non-album single, and both believed it had great potential to be a hit.
The basic track featured McCartney on acoustic guitar and guide vocals, and Laine on bass guitar. ‘Mull Of Kintyre’ was recorded outside the studio, so that the musicians were in the environment they were celebrating in song.
Six tape reels were filled before a satisfactory version was captured. The rest of the session was devoted to editing and mixing the song and mixing ‘Girls School’, which became the flipside of the single.
