John Lennon is best man at Peter Boyle’s wedding

John Lennon was Best Man at the wedding of American actor Peter Boyle and journalist Loraine Alterman on 21 October 1977.

Boyle and Alterman had met on the set of the Mel Brooks film Young Frankenstein, in which he was starring as the Monster. At the time Alterman was working for Rolling Stone magazine. She knew Yoko Ono, and Boyle later became friends with Lennon.

The ceremony took place in the chapel at the Church Center of the United Nations in New York City.

Q: Another little-known fact about you is that John Lennon was your best man.

PB: We knew John and Yoko. My wife and I had a very low-key wedding. At the last minute, I asked John to stand in as my best man. And he said yes. The rest is history.

Q: Did he sing?

PB: No. But he is John Lennon. And everything he does is memorable.

Q: Was there a heavy amount of recreational drug use at the reception?

PB: No comment. Actually, there wasn’t.

Q: The ‘no comment’ was better, but we’ll get you on the record saying ‘no.’

PB: Yeah, that’s good.
