Recording: Dear Boy, Now Hear This Song Of Mine by Paul and Linda McCartney

Studio B, Sound Recorders Studio, Los Angeles
Producer: Jim Guercio
Engineer: Armin Steiner

Paul and Linda McCartney resumed work on the Ram album on 1 March 1971.

This was their first recording session at Sound Recorders Studio, situated at 6226 Yucca Street in Los Angeles. Ram had hitherto been recorded in New York City.

The studio’s owner Armin Steiner engineered the sessions. Unusually, Paul chose not to produce the recordings, temporarily handing over the role to Jim Guercio.

McCartney began by working on ‘Dear Boy’. He taped the piano and initial vocals on this day, using the studio’s Steinway grand piano.

The rest of the day’s session was spent on ‘Now Hear This Song Of Mine’, which he had begun on 22 February in New York. He intended the piece to be used for radio spots to promote Ram.

In this session he taped electric piano and vocal snippets, including improvised comedic turns, which were listed in the studio logs as ‘Moment Recordings’. Stereo mixes of these, and the music recorded on 22 February, were compiled onto a tape reel, and were titled ‘Rock No.1’, ‘Rock No.2’, ‘Boogie No.1A’, ‘Boogie No.2B’, ‘Boogie No.2’, ‘Gospel’, ‘Loose Talk’, and ‘Come On Boogie’.
