Mixing: Mull Of Kintyre by Wings

AIR Studios, London
Producer: Paul McCartney
Engineer: Geoff Emerick

A mixing session for Wings’ ‘Mull Of Kintyre’ took place on 7 December 1977.

The song had already been released as a single, and was riding high in the UK charts. However, Paul McCartney wanted to make a new promotional film, to be used alongside Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s clip shot in Scotland.

A new promo was needed because the radio edit of the song, which at 3:30 was over a minute shorter than the full version, was judged to be more TV-friendly, and the first video could not easily be reworked to fit.

Paul McCartney had directed a second promo on 2 December, but was shelved. On 5 December, he was joined at AIR Studios in London by director Nicholas Ferguson, who was to direct a third promo film on 9 December at Elstree Studios.

The new audio mixes of the song made on this day were labelled ‘Master Backing Track – Full Length’ and ‘Edit Backing Track’. The first of those was for Wings’ appearance on The Mike Yarwood Christmas Special on 10 December, and the second was to be used in Ferguson’s promo.
