A third promotional film for ‘Mull Of Kintyre’ was shot at Elstree Studios on 9 December 1977.
Paul McCartney wanted a new promo because the radio edit of the song, which at 3:30 was more than a minute shorter than the full version, was judged to be more TV-friendly, but Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s first video could not easily be reworked to fit.
McCartney had directed a second promo on 2 December, but it was shelved and never shown. He instead enlisted director Nicholas Ferguson and designer John Clark to recreate the titular region of Scotland at Elstree.
The three members of Wings were joined by bagpipers and drummers from the Campbeltown Pipe Band, who had played on ‘Mull Of Kintyre’. They remained in London for an appearance with Wings on The Mike Yarwood Christmas Special the following day.
Wings went to AIR Studios in London after the shoot where the London Town song ‘Girlfriend’ was mixed in stereo.
