It appears to have been a lucky escape, as it was a failed bomb this morning, which would have killed many. 22 people have required hospital treatment, but none of their injuries are said to be serious.
Donald Trump appears to have leaked sensitive security information via twitter again, just as he did after the Manchester bombing. The man really is a dangerous idiot. I think the time is coming closer when we stop briefing the Americans about ongoing situations because – if the information he tweeted is correct – it appears the man cannot be trusted with not leaking confidential briefings.
The man moans constantly about leaks within his own security forces, but is happy to leak confidential briefings himself. What a total hypocrite!

Well, after years, decades, of protest…
…the only country in the world that bans women from driving, Saudi Arabia, is to lift the ban by June 2018. A massive step forward for women’s rights in a country that is incredibly repressive in its treatment of women.
In other news, Twitter is trialing 280-character tweets among a small group of users, with an eye on rolling it out to everyone. What does this mean for US domestic and foreign policy? Trump having 140-characters has been bad enough! (Luckily, he doesn’t appear to be in the trial group.)

Offline I’m so happy about what happened in Saudi Arabia, I hope this is a first step on the long road of women getting equal rights in this country.

No, I’m scared. Right now, everything seems so chaotic. The only coalition possible is one out of CDU, CSU, FDP, and the Green party, which is so weird as they don’t fit together at all. I mean, CSU has announced that they won’t start a coalition without establishing a maximum number of refugees to be taken every year and the Green Party announced that they would under no circumstances back off from their demand not to banish any refugees from the country. Or take a look at the energy policy, the Green Party wants to ban energy from burning coal altogether whereas the probusiness FDP is strictly against this. Normally parties with opposite interests like this would never form a coalition, but now they are forced to because the big parties, CDU and SPD, lost so many votes. But how can policy function and be effective if parties have to coalise only to have the majority in parliament despite disagreeing on many important points?
I really fear that the new government won’t get anything done properly because they can’t agree on a thing and that as a result, the rightwing AfD will get even more votes next election.

Offline Mass shooting at a country music festival in Las Vegas with 50 confirmed dead and numbers expected to rise due to the amount of those seriously injured. The worst in US history. Some of the footage is horrific.
It’s a terrible thing to say but neither is it a shock nor will anything change in regards to US gun laws.
God help the friends and families of the victims.

Offline But few of our attacks involve guns, @Starr Shine?. They do involve knives, and there are constant discussions around strengthening the laws and penalties around carrying, and use of, a knife. They also involve chemicals, etc., turned into explosives. Something that is already pretty strictly controlled, though they are always looking for ways to strengthen further. They also involve vehicles. Trickier one to do something about. I can’t think of a recent UK mass attack that involved firearms. When that does happen, we’ll be sure to discuss further restrictions should they be viewed as making an event less likely.
The trouble with mass attacks in the US is that they nearly always involve a firearm.
You can’t blame us for not discussing the availability of firearms in response to the mass attacks we’ve witnessed this year that haven’t involved firearms. Sorry, but we’ll save that debate for when something happens that involves firearms that have been got hold of far too easily. Sadly, though, that seems to be very much an American problem.

How many shootings in the UK have there been?
Additionally, if there are attacks, the UK, and many other countries, review what can be done to ensure the same kind of attack does not happen again if at all possible. They try and at least tighten up laws and make it harder.
Maybe if the US had the brains to change the laws mass shootings in the US would go down but everyone knows that’s not going to happen because as soon as anyone even whispers it people stand up and start shouting about their right to bear arms and how un-American it is to the Second Amendment. Sandy Hook was the tragedy when it became clear that nothing would change and, sadly, it’s now not even a shock when such events as in Las Vegas occur.
How anyone can watch footage of today’s attack and not think something has to be done is beyond me. But folk will watch, say the attacks may still happen even if change happens and so what’s the point of bothering.

Offline Here is a message from @William Shears Campbell, our fellow forumpudlian and Las Vegas resident.
So I’m not sure if you all are aware or not yet, but last night the biggest shooting in the history of the USA happened right in my hometown, Las Vegas. This is an absolutely terrible incident. I sincerly hope that all of you in Vegas currently are doing alright, and for those of you outside of Vegas I hope you do your best to stay safe. Whether or not you are for or against firearms, I hope we can all come together in agreement that gun violence is bad. I hope you all do your very best to stay safe. I love you all

Offline As if today could get any worse, Tom Petty is gone.
He was found last night unconscious in cardiac arrest and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. His life support was pulled earlier today.

Offline I’m a bit late to the conversation, but I’m deeply horrified by this attack.
Unfortunately, the gun laws aren’t the only problem. People considering a mass shooting get spurred on by other people who do perform them, causing a domino affect. Something needs to be done, and now. No, wait, after Trump sends more aid to Puerto Rico.

Offline I’m honestly extremely upset with the way the media responded to the events of today.
First, I’m furious that they pronounced Petty dead while he was still alive, resulting is a period of extreme sadness, then bitter hope, then more sadness, then anger.
And then there is this:
Is this news!? Of course the shooter’s brother is shocked by what happened, it feels so despicable to me that 3 news stations came to this poor guys house to ask him the most obvious questions of all time.
It reminds of the stupid reporters who asked the Beatles about stupid crap like when they’re next going to get a haircut.
