Wings recorded the backing track of the ‘Helen Wheels’ b-side ‘Country Dreamer’ on 26 September 1972.
The song had been written and demoed by Paul McCartney in 1970. According to drummer Denny Seiwell, it was played during the Ram sessions, although no studio recording from that time has been released.
McCartney revived it during the sessions for Red Rose Speedway in September 1972.
On this day Wings recorded 20 takes, with McCartney on acoustic guitar, Denny Laine on bass guitar, Henry McCullough on pedal steel guitar, and Seiwell playing drums with brushes. Take 14 was selected as the best.
Leftover feelings from the McCartneys spending time at their farm in Scotland. Paul played acoustic, Denny was on bass and Henry played a pedal steel guitar. Never played one before. Not bad, uh?

‘Country Dreamer’ was finished in December 1972, and mixed the following month. It was, however, held back until the end of 1973, when it was issued on the ‘Helen Wheels’ single.
