Cynthia Lennon sues John for divorce

9.00am, Thursday 22 August 1968 (45 years ago)

On this day John Lennon‘s estranged wife Cynthia countersued for divorce, citing his adultery with Yoko Ono.

John Lennon had previously filed for divorce, alleging that Cynthia had herself been adulterous – a charge she denied.

I had to survive this for Julian. I couldn’t afford to crumble: I had to be strong, do what was best for him. I could fight the divorce, but that would get horribly messy and in the circumstances as clean a break as possible seemed best. By dawn I had made my decision. I would countersue for divorce, citing his adultery with Yoko.

Lennon did not contest the order, and the divorce was granted in November 1968.

To be honest, as much as I love John, Cynthia was there from day one of the Beatles, she deserved half of what he had back then.

Here is a poetry for you John Lennon… You had a beautiful warm wife… She and Julian were the charm of your life…She loved you ignored your failings, and all you gave her was days of yearnings… Fame and drugs blinded you… Yoko had more drugs to feed you… You lost all that mattered… Last, in a lonely world, you lay shattered. Truly touched by Cynthia’s love, tho’ a feminist may ask why a strong woman as her let herself be trampled and used.
