Posted by someone at Paul’s official board:
Kanye performed his song at the pre game party & he performed with Rihanna but did not do 4 5.

“Rihanna also performed a few solo hits, including “Umbrella,” “Rude Boy” and“We Found Love.” West performed his new single “Only One” live for the first time, as well as “Jesus Walks,” “Ni—– In Paris” and “Black Skinhead.” The two did not perform their latest collaboration, “FourFiveSeconds,” however. Guess we’ll have to wait until the Grammy Awards for that one.”http://www.billboard.com/artic…..wl-concert
“Those holding their breath for the live debut of “FourFive Seconds,” however, were left disappointed — though don’t be surprised if next weekend’s Grammy Awards offer some sort of performance. Instead, Rihanna blazed through some of the most feisty highlights of her catalog, from the lesser-known (“Rockstar 101,” “Jump,” “Cold Case Love”) to the mellow (“Take A Bow,” “Hate How Much I Love You”) to the anthemic (“We Found Love,” set-closer “Diamonds.”)”

This is something I’ve not seen before. It’s Paul McCartney ‘s rehearsal for a chat show with Michael Parkinson. For those of you who don’t know, Michael Parkinson was the best chat show host ever on British television. He is now retired.

Am I the only one underwhelmed by his recent choices of people to work with? Then again, I suppose he made plenty of poor career choices in the 80’s, but at least those songs seem better now because of the glow of nostalgia.
Nope. IMO today’s music industry is such that he has to. But, c’mon Macca!

I would hope (and expect) that Paul wouldn’t work with any other performer if he didn’t want to; and he wouldn’t want to if he didn’t have some appreciation for their music. If Paul truly likes Kanye and Rihanna’s stuff, enough to want to perform with them, then more power to him! Sounds fairly characteristic of Paul – he isn’t some “Grarr all modern music is rubbish!” curmudgeon.

I’d have thought it was the other way in the 80’s taking the Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder collaborations as two examples. Big names and big hits at the time but looking back the songs are, to be blunt and vulgar, s**t. No amount of nostalgia can make ‘Say, Say, Say’ listenable or ‘Ebony And Ivory ‘ any less cheesy or embarrassing an entry in Paul’s catalogue.

As someone who lived through those releases, I can tell you I didn’t need to look back to share that view.

I lived through them and I think they are fun songs. At the time I hated them, but now I like them.
But, going back to the point made above–it’s not as if musicians like this are all Paul can choose from. He could work with Arcade Fire or Tame Impala or some other groups like that. But I guess Yoko has better taste in collaborators.

I suppose Rihanna is seen as being more hip with the young kids than Arcade Fire, tho i thought Kanye West was thought by the masses to be a bit of a prat. I know nothing about Kanye and the only think i know about Rihanna is that she likes to wear little when promoting her latest songs (tho in a totally classy way) – oh and that she won some court battle with Top Shop.

Can’t see Paul doing these for the money. More than likely he likes their music along with getting his name amongst younger folk and in the headlines and finds it challenging and exciting going into different genres and working with some of the bigger names. Paul likes to try everything and good on him for doing so even if the results arent to my liking. I’d rather he dipped his toe in all the rivers than remained cranking out the same kind of songs album after album before going on tour and playing 35 songs from a selection of the same 40.

I don’t share the “good on him” sentiment, but certainly he is unpredictable, and that can be entertaining in its own way, I guess. I don’t think he can possibly learn anything from these artists. It’s not real music. It’s all just manufactured by corporations to make a buck, isn’t it?

I dont see why he cant learn from collaborations such as these. The final results might not be great in our opinions but Paul can tap into various techniques and methods used by others so it keeps him fresh and active in his thinking and approach for future recordings. You can always learn from others; it would be the greatest foolishness from Paul if he went into these thinking there was nothing new to take in and i seriously doubt he would do it if he didnt think there would be a benefit to him musically.
Paul could very easily write 14 tracks in a few weeks, go into the studio and record them with his band, a few guest artists and a notable producer or two in the same way of old in the space of a few months, put them out and know that the fans would get excited and buy it. Basically go down the album-making conveyor and i’d rather he didnt. If going this way of working with current artists means i dont care for the end product then so be it. I didnt particularly like ‘New’ (and i despise that f*****g name, if ever an album name made me never want to listen to the actual album).
And what is “real music”, who decides what is the criteria that needs to be met to be classified as such?

It doesn’t surprise me. Paul is a pop act and he is working with other pop acts.

Real music is where the artists are intelligent and write their own music, and actually put thought into the music, instead of singing songs written by some corporate hack because they know it will make money, or using a formula that is tried and true to get mindless teens “shaking their asses.”
I don’t see the point of Paul collaborating with these artists unless he is planning to dumb down his music for the masses. Maybe we can see a video of him twerking with Miley Cyrus, or he can have a rap album or two, or he could do a dance video with Katy Perry or something.

No offense meant to anyone who likes that kind of music. I actually like Miley Cyrus a little more after her collaborations with the Flaming Lips. And there is nothing wrong with owning a pop album or two. I have some music by Lady Gaga and other pop artists of the same type. I just don’t see how Paul McCartney fits into this picture or why he would want to be involved.
