The underlying theme here seems to be that mono is a good thing.
In 1968, at least in the U.S., mono was synonymous with “hopelessly outdated” and still is seen that way today.
The exception would be recordings originally carried out in mono and then artificially reproduced into stereo. In such cases, the mono is clearly superior. (I have some borderline hilarious re-releases of early Beatle records where all the vocals are one side and all the instruments on the other; great for Karaoke!).
I don’t know that in 1968 EMI would have been knocking itself out to produce the best mono possible. In Britain maybe?

A few more details regarding ATU.
A mono mix incorporating animal effects was prepared some time later that year [1968] (an acetate is played during the January 1969 Twickenham Sessions), but the charity LP failed to surface. In March 1969, the mix was copied for inclusion on a mooted Yellow Submarine EP, but that was aborted as well. Finally the Wildlife album surfaced in December 1969…” (‘That Magic Feeling. The Beatles’ Recording Legacy Vol. 2, 1966 – 1970′ by John C Winn.)
George Martin created 2 stereo mixes on October 2nd 1969, one with the effects and the other without, both sped up slightly, with the effects matching the earlier mono mix. And as we know the mono mix was left in the vaults for 40 years until the Mono Boxset. So just another 40 years until Carnival Of Light is released (yeah right fat chance).
Mono was dying in the UK but kept going until mid ’69, the UK being the only place the mono White Album was released and of course we got all the singles in mono up to Get Back . Maybe another reason why the YS ep was ditched. And its not just rereleases, you can still cut out the vocals on all the tracks on Please Please Me and With The Beatles on the remasters. Bootleggers managed to create Yesterday without the orchestra thanks to i think the ’87 Help ! cd remix. A whole lot of outfakes are out there where they simply turned off a speaker to give just the vocal, tho normally with plenty of leakage. Most sounded horrid, i remember listening to a supposed vocal booth outtake of Rain – sounded like your speakers were broken.
However Yesterday is actually quite good.

Of course yellow submarine counts as a Beatles album! Even if there are some older songs, there were new (and if I might add, quite amazing) songs, making it a release with new material at the time, making it an album.
PEACE OUT.

Of course it’s an album! Just because some (okay, nearly all) of them are old, I would at least consider it a soundtrack album.

I like this album as a soundtrack, but not really as an album. it just doesn’t mix well. its sort of in a pattern as the U.S. versions of “A Hard Days Night” and “Help !”, with the George Martin instumental tracks mixed in there. i always wondered if it would’ve been a better idea instead of having the “Yellow Submarine ” soundtrack because the title track is on “Revolver ” and “All You Need Is Love ” on “Magical Mystery Tour ” and as far as those George Martin orchestral tracks are concerned put them in a collection with the soundtrack he composed in “A Hard Days Night” and “Help !” and add “Only A Northern Song “, “All Together Now “, “Hey Bulldog ” and “It’s All Too Much ” to the Past Masters collection. i think it still wouldve fit on 2 discs too.

Aaaarrrgggghhhhh! You’ve poked me with my favourite stick!
Don’t tell me something was on MMT unless it was on the UK double EP! YS was an OFFICIAL UK album, probably their weakest in terms of new material, and they would probably have been better advised to follow their idea of a similar double ep as MMT. If any album from the ’80s CD core collection should have been swallowed by Past Masters it was the American MMT – which, as I have said many times – left a big 1967-shaped hole in the middle of their career, and – out of its 11 tracks only featured 1 that appeared on a UK album! And even then that was two years later!

When it comes to an album collection, i’m sort of “anel” it has to be perfect meaning there can NOT be a song on there which is already on another album, it just ruins the atmosphere for, call me a perfectionist weirdo, but thats just me. to me, MMT coverd what was not one LPs (or tapes). heck for that matter put the 4 YS songs on there. that’ll make things even.

See, I don’t necessarily disagree there, but YS is what it purports to be – the soundtrack to a film, and the only track that had appeared on a UK album previously was the title track, which could hardly be left off. My objection to what you said was your pointing at AYNIL having previously being included on the US MMT album. That didn’t make it available on a UK album.
As I said, they had an idea for another double-ep that would add Across The Universe . They dropped the idea and went for an album, giving the wonderful George Martin the second side and a substantial pay-day. I can live very happily with that album that only had one previous on-a-UK-album track, even if I rarely listen to George’s orchestral contributions.

i would think the MMT album shouldve been released in the U.K. because it does follow the formula of the U.K. version of “A Hard Days Night” and “Help “, with the soundtrack songs on side 1 and other songs (some hits) on side 2.

It doesn’t follow their UK release policy in any way! Ignoring the 7 tracks that were released in December 1967 (the MMT double ep and Hello, Goodbye ), no UK Beatles album after Please Please Me (which they had little say say on), included four single tracks.

Sorry i might be misunderstanding here, not fully understanding what you mean by 4 single tracks, but A Hard Days Night has all 4 tracks that were also on the A Hard Days Night and Can’t Buy Me Love singles (Things We Said Today & You Can’t Do That being the other two).

No, no, i meant…(this is getting off the topic of YS) OK you know how the U.K. “Help ” album, side 1 are the songs from the film and side 2 are the non-soundtrack songs? Thats what the U.S. MMT is.

I must say, I am a little disappointed with the 2012 reissue LP’s, that they decided to include the MMT Capital release over the original EP.

YS was definitely a Beatles release, but I never think of it as a Beatles *album*, nor do I acknowledge its existence when I participate in one of those “rank the Beatles albums” threads. (Even though I do rank MMT – sorry Ron/mja! I love that you’re so passionate about the issue.)

YS is a “real” Beatles album, although it’s certainly their weakest…only really necessary for the 4 unreleased tracks that were included on it. Still, standing alongside the film (which I love), it’s just fine. Weird timing releasing it so soon after the White Album , though. And with that psychedelic imagery (and music) it was already a bit out of date, especially with the back-to-basics sound of the White Album still ruling the charts and sales figures.
