Does this mean A Hard Day's Night and Help ! are soundtracks, rather than albums?

You all will have read that Dave Dee is no longer with us. But Mickey and Titch and I would like to carry on the good work that's always gone down in number two.

No. Because A Hard Day's Night and Help ! have actual Beatles songs on the B-sides.

Maybe the American versions would count as soundtracks…

The American ones do count

I don't count Yellow Submarine or Magical Mystery Tour as albums in my head. If someone asked me to name the Beatles's albums in order, I'd go “…Revolver , Sgt Pepper 's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the White Album , Abbey Road , Let It Be “, unless I deliberately thought “include those two”.

Just 17…

I told her I didn’t

I would count Magical Mystery Tour just for the fact that I actually LIKE the songs on the album, and don't really like any of the ones on Yellow Submarine .

There are very few things that all members of the Forum agree on.

That Yellow Submarine is the weakest album is one of them.

But in defense of the Beatles:

– They had no interest and no input into the creation of this album.

– To see where they were coming from, you have to see the original Beatle cartoons:

So this:

feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PLB94FC02BC29F920B

is what the Beatles thought they would be contributing to.

Al Brodax was the producer of this cartoon, and Al Brodax had been named producer of the Yellow Submarine movie.

Needless to say, they weren’t going to knock themselves out. Before leaving for India, they simply provided Brodax with 4 songs they’d just completed.

Does anyone think things would have turned out differently had they only known…..?

For me both Magical Mystery Tour and yellow submarine are eps and I don’t care that the yellow submarine ep wasn’t released. If ylu ask me which songs are on yellow submarine I will say: Hey Bulldog , All Together Now , It’s All Too Much , Only A Northern Song and Across The Universe . It seems like the never released ep was the british version and the album the american (like in Magical Mystery Tour ) but I know that it isn’t so. A question, what do you think would be the name of the yellow submarine ep if they had released it. I mean they probably had a name because the ep was mastered. Maybe the name had been Yellow Submarine but that would be a bit strange because then yellow submarine wouldn’t be on the yellow submarine ep (anyway probably my least favourite beatles songs are yellow submarine and All You Need Is Love and both were put onto yellow submarine although already released). I think the name would have been Songs from the film (movie) yellow submarine

Yes just not a good one. Only Hey Bulldog is a standout with the others decent but nothing noteworthy. GM’s orchestral score is a nice relaxing listen but not anything worth checking out.

I have actually cut up both MMT and YS and placed the songs within their relevant album era’s and taking the MMT ep track order (Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane have to be with Pepper). However have placed the Songtrack remixes alongside GM’s pieces and the 5.1 surround mixes in their own album. Dull but true.

Re the ep title name, would agree on the name being Songs from the movie Yellow Submarine if Across The Universe was featured in the film. So maybe something taken from the lyrics from one of the songs and a subtitle “featuring songs from the hit movie Yellow Submarine “.

As for the beatles interest in the film i doubt it would made a difference in mid ’67 due to where they were with TM and the Mararishi, and MMT, there was too much going on. Certainly the songs given wouldnt have been any better as it was still a cartoon, maybe more involvement in the ideas of the film but i doubt it really needed it. Free license is always better than the artist breathing down your neck and having to approve everything.

I never, ever think of it as a “Beatles Album” – even though it is indeed an album of songs and says “The Beatles” on the cover, which is fairly undeniable. Both “Hey Bulldog ” and “It’s All Too Much ” are first-rate imo.

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Good Idea meanmistermustard, an example:

“SAIL THE SHIP
featuring songs from the hit movie yellow submarine”

or another idea

Across The Universe
and 4 songs from the hit movie yellow submarine”

I thought Northern Songs, from Only A Northern Song and they were published by Northern Songs but it would give the wrong impression; ‘The Beatles Northern Songs’ with Donald Where’s Your Troosers, Auld Lang Syne, My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose, Loch Lomond (man that song gives me the chills, the alternate Scottish national anthem).heart

The following people thank meanmistermustard for this post:

A few of you I think have mentioned “Across The Universe .”

But where does that come from?

It’s not on the album; is it even in the movie?

The proposed Yellow Submarine EP (mono) was to include the 4 album songs and ATU. Just to get rid of it.

Would have to check the timeline but it wouldnt surprise me if the EP was scheduled to be released after the soundtrack album with ATU added as an enticer for the fans who wanted all beatle songs. Tho I think The Beatles now had the power to veto any release they didnt want so it was dropped.

Interestingly the ep was true mono and not the fold down stereo used on the mono lp. Strange that true mono was sitting there waiting to be used but wasnt – maybe that was to be another marketing point: “fools, you bought the mono lp thinking it was true but we fooled you ha ha ha ha. But now you can get the 4 new beatle songs in true mono with this new ep featuring tracks from the smash hit movie ‘Yellow Submarine “. But wait, thats not all. You also get a brand new sensational beatles song exclusive to this release ‘Across The Universe ‘. Thats right, a new beatles song available nowhere else. Now available from your nearest music retailer.” Sadly Apple wasnt in the habit of ripping of the fans, we had to wait 20 years for that pleasure.

Nice idea meanmistermustard. Anyway is the mono masters mix of Across The Universe the mix that should be released on yellow submarine, Lewissohn says the bird effects were added when the song was mixed into stereo in october or so, but the mono set booklet says they were already added to the mono mix done in february 68 in january 69. So is the mono masters version the yellow submarine ep version?

Yes it is. Mono Masters took the mixes prepared for the EP and put it on CD. Same mix.
