Wings began recording the Band On The Run album on 3 September 1973.
The sessions took place at EMI Studios at 7 Wharf Road in Apapa, Lagos. The studio had eight-track facilities, but upon their arrival Wings found few microphones, no sound baffles or isolation booths, and basic recording facilities.
Undeterred, the band spent two days helping local carpenters bring it up to scratch before the sessions began. The walls were also adorned with Wings posters to make the surroundings a little more familiar.
Wings began the first week of recordings by working on ‘Mamumia’, which had the working title ‘Ma Moonia’. The backing track had Paul McCartney on acoustic guitar and guide vocals, and Denny Laine on congas. Laine then added a second acoustic guitar track, and McCartney overdubbed a bass guitar part.
McCartney replaced his guide vocals with two new lead vocals, and Linda McCartney added a synthesizer part which was mostly left out of the final mix.
