John Lennon and Yoko Ono attended a second hearing at the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) in New York on 18 April 1972.
This was the second hearing at the Federal Office Building, following an initial adjourned one on 16 March.
This 30-minute meeting was chaired by Special Inquiry Officer Ira Fieldsteel. Lennon’s lawyer Leon Wildes announced that Lennon had recently been appointed to the US President’s Council for Drug Abuse, and to the New York University faculty.
Wildes then requested that the INS cease their deportation efforts since they had failed to follow their own procedures by disallowing Lennon to have non-priority status while Ono was attempting to locate and gain custody of her estranged eight-year-old daughter Kyoko.
The request was rejected, and the hearing was adjourned until 2 May, when Lennon was finally given permission to apply for permanent US residency.
