John Lennon and Yoko Ono attended a hearing at the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) in New York on 16 March 1972.
They had received a notice of deportation from the United States on 6 March, and ordered to attend the hearing at the Federal Office Building.
Lennon requested a delay in the deportation so that he could challenge his UK conviction for drugs possession in 1968, and Ono asked for the same so that she could locate her estranged eight-year-old daughter Kyoko. The hearing was therefore adjourned until 18 April, which allowed them the opportunity to apply for permanent residency.
