I Want You (She’s So Heavy)

Both sigh and Richard have sussed out that Venus is the Shocking Blue song that leads to my Beatles song.

hint: Shocking Blue sang something about Venus similar to what someone in my song said about another person in my song.

Good morning! Ok, I happen to know this song (although we used to sing it with a slightly altered lyric) and after a quick run through in me head I have found a crossover phrase in Get Back .

Shocking Blue: She’s got it/Yeah baby, she’s got it

Beatles: All the girls around her say she’s got it

Someone PM’d me asking a question that I think would be a good discussion point for those who play this game.

Should clues be given out so quickly – like after two or three wrong guesses? What say ye?

Thanks Ted. To answer your question, just switch the V with a P and you’ll get the idea ahdn_john_08_gif. Ok, here is something new to ponder…

Generally, I would say no.  When I first started playing this game, there were more people playing and games moved much faster.  Waiting to give hints made more sense because the course of the game narrowed much more quickly. Now we seem to have the same 5-6 players regularly playing and games have slowed down, which has organically led to quicker hints. In some cases, the picture/song relationship can be obscure, as I thought mine above might be, and I thought the hint was still vague enough to steer but not pinpoint.

I know this isn’t an answer but just hope to lead to some discussion.

@Ahhh Girl I agree with Teddy. If we follow a strict interpretation of the rules while there are so few players, I think the game will die. As soon as things pick up on the forum, I’m sure the rules will organically come back into play. I’ll try to limit my hints to one a day, in case someone felt like they didn’t have a chance to play.

I would probably leave it to the player’s own judgement, and only use strict rules when/if they seem to be necessary.

Having had a few hours to think about this, and reading the responses so far, along with reading the rules in the OP, my thought is that a rule should be added which sets a point, at maybe around the five or six wrong responses given, where the first hint can be given.

There is already the rule that a solid clue be given after nine wrong responses and think it makes sense to have a point where people can start offering hints.

Yes, the forum – not just the games, has become rather sluggish in recent weeks. It happens, and has done as long as I’ve been here. Things will pick up again as they always do. I can also understand the temptation to give earlier hints when the game is going slower than we usually would to try and speed it up, but I would worry that it becomes normalised for hints to be given as early as someone wants.

While I understand Teddy and SB’s points, unlike SB I don’t feel “the rules will organically come back into play”. Firstly, there is no rule in the OP about when hints should be given. Secondly, when the speed of the game does pick up again, there’s every chance that newer members join in, and will look at the OP for the rules, and will have watched or looked at the most recent games to get an idea of how it’s played; should they see hints being given very early in the game they’ll likely think that that’s the way the game is usually played. I wouldn’t want newer members who join in having to be asked not to give hints so early because the game has sped up again, and that hints aren’t given before the fifth or sixth wrong response when the game is moving faster.

That, in itself, might put off newer members from continuing to play because that wasn’t how they saw the game being played, and that there’s nothing in the rules they read about when to start giving hints, slowing down the game again.

I’d probably set it that hints can start being given after the fifth wrong response, the midway point between the start of the game and the required solid clue after nine wrong responses.

Myself, I don’t think waiting for the fifth wrong response would slow the game that much or risk it dying.

Very true. Things always seem to slow down in October/November, but things pick up again as we get close to Christmas. Traffic will pick up in a month, rest assured.

As for AG’s picture, I’ll get the obvious out of the way and guess Across The Universe ?

Ah yes, the current pic…how about Good Morning Good Morning ? (you start to roam)

The picture is from a Martian Rover. Another word for rove might be roam.

Also, well reasoned thoughts on giving hints. I think waiting for five guesses is a good strategy.  Maybe a compromise can be if there are no new guesses after 48 hours (unusual), a small hint can be given to bump the thread.

As for the hints, I personally find this thread to be one of the most active ones on the forum, so I don’t find it stagnates very often. If I’ve got a picture that I deem to be quite difficult, I tend to give clues sooner than one I deem to be easier. I thought this system worked well, but I suppose there’s no harm in having a 5 guess limit before the first hint.

It kind of cracks me up that we discuss the rules in so much detail tbf! As Monica Geller would say, “rules help control the fun!”

Hi Ron, AG did define the “hint” guidelines in the first post.

“Verbal clues such as “someone is very close” or “think about ___” are ok, but the SOLID clue after the 9th wrong guess is an absolute part of the game.”

Looks like all is well and the game is rolling along as AG envisioned.

Agree and disagree, @sigh butterfly, AG says hints are fine and they’ve generally not been used before around halfway to nine, but they’ve started to become more commonly used earlier in the game, and we’re being asked whether we think hints should be used that early in the game. There has never been a defined rule on when hints can be used as there is on the solid clue, just that they can be used.

Myself, I don’t mind a comment that so-and-so is close or on the right lines, but feel more specific hints should be left out of the early attempts.

And this is one game that has changed massively since AG introduced it (it originally kept on going until someone got the answer), and the rules have also changed and/or been better defined as time has gone by.

I agree with Teddy that a more specific hint can be offered if the game stalls though.
