Released on this day in 1977, the first of two album releases by David Bowie that year and one of a handful of albums to hold the distinction of “love at first listen” for me:

I hope I’m not committing a dreadful infraction by having just finished listening to something 30 seconds ago — as opposed to “right now”.

A McCartney song I’ve never heard before in all my life, I’ll Give You A Ring. To me this ranks with his songs that are inspired. Not all of his songs are inspired, and it seems like more and more of the output from the 80s forward has been uninspired, compared with the two decades prior.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8 Pretty nice song from Paul there; I especially like the descent in the verse and George’s little guitar figures. Add some Ringo drum-and-cymbal excitement, some of George’s electric 12-string Rickie, work up some harmonies from John and George, and the result might’ve been good enough for AHDN track #14…

Streaming classic soul/r&b station (as usual); will update when something Beatley (like a cover) shows up. Until then, this’ll do:

Surprisingly good, and I’d say one of the best of theirs from that time. I agree it could have been fleshed out further with a third part to the song perhaps sung by John in his early Rock style.

Haha ok, so I was just about to update with this Miracles original…Screenshot_20230115-140521_Stingray-Music.jpgImage Enlarger

…while commenting “no covers OF the Beatles as of yet…”; but before I could update, this happened:

I like it a lot, but I wouldn’t quite say it’s one of his inspired tunes. That’s a subtle judgment call, and I’m not necessarily sure about it… But on second thought, the very fact that I’m not sure is a disqualifying factor, because one of the key characteristics of his inspired songs is that I know immediately without any doubt upon first hearing. But a Paul tune doesn’t have to be inspired to be very good. Inspiration is just the crème de la crème reserved for a special cadre of songs, like Penny Lane or I Will or Back In The USSR , etc etc etc

I could have definitely seen Love Of The Loved appearing on the album, but I’ll Be Back was a good album closer. The song would have also been suited on Please Please Me or With The Beatles as it reflects the feel and energy of those albums.

I’m currently listening to this nice ballad.

I’ll Be Back ” personally feels like an odd choice for an album closer, because it doesn’t have a proper finish, instead of simply fading out while switching between major and minor chords. But I guess the air of uncertainty can be seen as an appropriate mood for the singer of these particular ambivalent lyrics.

Now playing:

“...Unemployment rising fast/The Beatles’ new record’s a gas!“…

I’ve been on a Pink Floyd kick lately, and obviously have been taking a break from the forum. It’s been a long while, and it’s good to be back. Currently, A Saucerful Of Secrets, Atom Heart Mother , Meddle, Wish you were here, and More (that’s the name) are my 5 favorite albums at the moment.

My vacation to england was great, and of course I went to liverpool! It was great. They’ve fixed up the city quite some bit. Although, I am not a huge fan of Primark.

Anyways, Pink Floyd is now a band I’m listening to a lot.

@Magill It’s great to have you back on here. Pink Floyd are an excellent band. One of my favourite songs is If. I love the transition from Atom Heart Mother Suite to the track on the album. Such a beautiful song.

I’m glad you had a lovely time in the UK. Did you go to any Beatles related places while you were in Liverpool? I hope to go there for the third time this year.

I’m currently listening to this.

Solid song, but missing the magical ingredient of Pauline inspiration. I don’t know how to explain why I feel it in Helen Wheels, but not in Hi Hi Hi .  It’s a mystery.

That’s odd: in my previous post the “Hi Hi Hi ” was automatically turned into a link to the PM songs page, but “Helen Wheels” was not — even though Helen Wheels is listed on that songs page and both it and Hi Hi Hi are also blue there.bb18.PNGImage Enlarger
