Offline I love it but I agree with George Martin and a few others who said it – they could of condensed it down and the tracks that aren’t the best on the album they could of used elsewhere. Having said that, it’s cool that it takes so long to listen to the full album because it’s so long.
Also, considering the tensions that were present, they didn’t mess the album up. They could of thought, well, as I don’t really want to do this anymore and everybody is arguing with everybody and their uncle, I’ll sort of give up and not really bother much but they didn’t, they still made a damn good album.
Moving along in our God given ways, safety is sat by the fire/Sanctuary from these feverish smiles, left with a mark on the door.

Offline My favorite albums always change (beside Rubber Soul , it is always on 1st spot). It is on 2nd place for me, usually a tie with Revolver .

Offline Child Of Nature has a similar theme to Mother Natures Son and whilst it was in Johns head in May for the forementioned demo, he might not have been that inawed with it due to the whole Mararishi thing come the time to record for the White Album . Thats not to say John or the others completely forgot about it until the Imagine sessions as there are run throughs of it during the Get Back sessions of January 1969.
There were even more demos from that time about, Polythene Pam and Mean Mister Mustard being on Antholgy 3, and who knows what remains in the vaults of each Beatle (well maybe not Ringo).
I personally love the album because of its incredible diversity, i dont buy into the idea it was too much or things should have been cut. If they had omitted stuff, released a single lp, and tracks remained in the vaults, everyone would be saying why wasnt that included, it would have made a great double album.

Are you saying this because of what I said about it should´ve been made shorter? Beacuse I did say that the tracks could´ve been used elswhere, on another album, for example. If it meant making the album shorter but not using the tracks taken off then, without a doubt, it´s better how it is.

Offline I’ve always thought “The White Album ” was among the best things The Beatles ever released. I think I would have had a tough time whittling it down to just one disc, as George Martin recommended — but maybe Ringo’s suggestion was good — to have a “White Album ” and a “Whiter Album”. There are a few songs — most of them Paul’s — that I wouldn’t have minded being chopped. I could have done without “Wild Honey Pie “, “Martha My Dear “, “Rocky Raccoon “, “Don’t Pass Me By ” and yes “Revolution 9 “. I also wish “Long Long Long” had been placed somewhere other than right after “Helter Skelter ” — I always end up missing most of the first verse of it because I don’t have the speakers up loud enough after all the fabulous noise of the preceeding track.
Then again — maybe Paul put it best: “It’s great, it sold, it’s the bloody Beatles White Album ! Shut Up!”

Offline Emily, my comment was more towards the arguement of a single disc, your post just brought it to mind.
Personally i believe that even if it was a single disc John would have fought to the bitter end to have Revolution 9 instead of most of his tracks. For a 14 track album it would be 2 or 3 George, 1 Ringo and 10/11 between John and Paul say 10 so five each ala Revolver but then Revolution 9 is 8 mins long which is two tracks. It would get complicated and there would have been a massive debate between the 4 (John, Paul and the two Georges) over what to ditch and what to save (cant see Ringo getting too bothered to get involved).

Offline I’m so glad they didn’t omit anything… There isn’t a single song on White Album that I don’t like, though WDWDIontR gets really annoying if you listen to it too often
Rubber Soul used to be my favorite album, but when I took the time to really listen to the White Album , I was just speechless. Especially the first disc; While My Guitar Gently Weeps , Happiness Is A Warm Gun ( really, those songs right after each other… incredible…), Martha My Dear , I’m So Tired , Blackbird , Piggies , Rocky Raccoon , Julia , pretty much every song on it is, I think, better than any of the songs the Beatles made before Help ! ( not that there aren’t great songs on the second disc; Helter Skelter and Cry Baby Cry for example)
I like the concept as well, pure White Album with the text slightly askew, an apple, the poster, big face pictures, is just beautiful, and very Yokoish, may I add. ( even if she didn’t play a huge role in the designing)
I don’t really mind Revolution 9 , either, I rather like it, actually- it reminds me of Kafka. The ominous, absurd atmosphere. It’s not something you can just pull off, to imagine that kind of world, the chaos, requires a very vivid imagination from the person(s).
Probably a lot of people consider Abbey Road to be George’s best album, but I definitely prefer White Album for his work. His work is so versatile, although in every song there is this tingling feeling of sadness, perhaps because of the disintegration of the Beatles. Piggies seem to be disliked by many, but I like the irony of the lyrics, pigs “clutching knives and forks to eat their bacon”. The pigs can be understood as animals, politicians or another John Doe who keeps up the appearances but not much else. Interlude is cool, too. It’s not something you often hear on George’s songs, I wonder who originally suggested it

Offline The White Album is one of my favorites, along with Sgt. Pepper . I just adore the versatility of it and how it showcases each individual member more. I love how I can find just about anything to suit my mood because the White Album has everything on it!

Offline The album’s eclecticism is its greatest asset. Had they gone with George Martin’s decision to make it just one single album (sorry, George, but that’s one of the few times you’ve been wrong 
), it would’ve no doubt lost a good deal of its character.

I think the White Album is one of the Beatles’ best albums. It shows everything they can do, from complete randomness like Revolution 9 to beautiful ballads like Julia and I Will to roudy rockers like Helter Skelter , plus so much more. If someone who knew nothing about the Beatles listened to the White Album , they’d probably think it was a compilation of songs (and not-quite-songs *coughcoughRevolution9coughcough*) by 20 different artists. The White Album is amazing, and I know that there will never be anything like it ever again. It’s definitely in my Top 5 favorite Beatles albums, maybe even 3, but I’m not sure exactly where. And some days I hate it (temporarily, of course), so it never rests peacefully in one place on my favorites list. But it’s up there. Way, way up there.

Offline I’d loved to have seen some of the more instituational city mens reactions to listening to this for the first time in ’68. Their faces would be a treat as they go thru all the genres, at times about to pick up the needle but the next track lulls them back in, until they get to Revolution 9 call it unlistenable garbage and the record is taken off.

Offline I have a four-album rotation for “favorite Beatles album” — Revolver , Abbey Road , Rubber Soul , White Album . Before I got the UK versions of Revolver and Rubber Soul , it was more of a two-album rotation, so R and RS are the relative johnny-come-latelys and consequently tend to bubble up to the top more often nowadays.
That said, TWA has definitely spent more years at #1 on my personal list than any of the other three. And more time as my favorite album period, than any other. I do love this record!

I agree except for one thing: this album does not to feature any of their great harmonies.
Not that they don’t harmonize perfectly well (“While My Guitar…”), but it’s subtle.
The great harmonies disappeared after Rubber Soul .
They came back in full force for one last hurrah on Abbey Road with “Because ,” but if I could only take a few Beatle albums with me on a desert island, at least one would have to have those harmonies.

I was just about to vehemently disagree with you, but then I glanced over the White Album again and realised that you are quite correct. I guess the gradual dissipation of studio teamwork, as well as the stark duality between hard-rockin’ numbers and solo acoustic numbers, put blissful pop harmonies aside for 1968. There are a couple of exceptions though: what about the absolutely spot-on doo-wop parody harmonies in the last section of Happiness Is A Warm Gun ? The epic blasts of harmony in the background of Helter Skelter ? Or the surfin’ Wilson brothers homage in the bridge of Back In The USSR ?

Hmm, they became subtler possibly, but again there are exceptions. Gotta love the complex bloom of voices at the beginning of Paperback Writer (like a book opening), the shimmering Eastern harmonies in the chorus of Rain , the “TAXMAAAAN” cries that mirror the Batman theme tune of the time, the gorgeously understated dreamy backing “oohs” in Here, There And Everywhere and I’m Only Sleeping , the entirety of And Your Bird Can Sing , the lush “it’s wonderful to be here” welcomes of the band to contrast with Paul’s yelling compere in Sgt Pepper ‘s, “see how they ruu-un” in Lady Madonna , and I don’t even know where to begin with all the lovely harmonies on Abbey Road (although Because , as you pointed out, would be an obvious start).
