Recording: Waterspout by Paul McCartney

Music Centre, London
Producer: Paul McCartney
Engineers: Chris Thomas

Paul McCartney recorded the unreleased song ‘Waterspout’ on 1 July 1977.

The session was ostensibly for Wings to re-record some of their Rockshow concert film audio. Chris Thomas, who was also working on The Sex Pistols’ Never Mind The Bollocks at the time, had made stereo mixes of Wings’ 1976 concerts in Los Angeles, Seattle, and New York, at AIR Studios in London from 23-30 May.

From 6 June to 1 July, Wings took part in sporadic and undocumented overdub sessions to finish the soundtrack. The sessions took place at the Music Centre, formerly De Lane Lea Music Centre, on Engineers Way in Wembley, London.

During this final session, McCartney added finishing touches to a recording of ‘Blackbird’, then began work a new song. He had made a four-track demo of ‘Waterspout’ at home, and transferred it to 24-track tape before adding a number of overdubs.

‘Waterspout’ remained unreleased, but was considered for inclusion on McCartney’s 1987 compilation All The Best! as the opening song on side two.
