A press launch for Wings’ fifth album Wings At The Speed Of Sound was held on 18 March 1976.
The event, arranged by MPL’s publicist Tony Brainsby, was held at London’s Palace Hotel. It was a launch party for the album, and a chance for music journalists to speak to the band ahead of their imminent European leg of the Wings Over The World Tour.
Paul McCartney mainly spoke to Steve Peacock of Street Life and Chris Welch from the Melody Maker. Gary Herman from Circus spoke to the band’s guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Joe English.
During the event, Brainsby informed McCartney of an urgent call from Angie McCartney, the wife of Paul’s father Jim. She gave him the news that Jim had died peacefully. Paul opted to continue the press event, and didn’t tell the other members of Wings about his father’s death until some weeks later.
