Recording: Too Many People, Ram On by Paul and Linda McCartney

Studio B, Sound Recorders Studio, Los Angeles
Producer: Paul McCartney
Engineer: Eirik Wangberg

Paul and Linda McCartney continued work on the Ram song ‘Too Many People’ on 18 March 1971.

Firstly they completed the backing vocals on the song, before the final touches were added. Paul had asked studio engineer Eirik Wangberg to bring a wooden pallet to the studio, and to position a microphone on it.

Then he hopped onto the pallet and started jumping on each quarter [note]. What a sound it gave on tape!

The sound of McCartney jumping can be heard in the final 30 seconds of the song.

‘Ram On’ was also completed on this day, with the McCartneys recording backing vocals.

During the mixing session, Eirik Wangberg suggested splitting the song in two – the first lasting up to 2:28, and the second fading in at 2:21 and ending with a few bars of what was then called ‘Sleeping On A Big Barn Bed’. Both parts were titled ‘Ram On’ on the album.
