Recording: Some People Never Know, African Rhythm by Wings

Studio Two, EMI Studios, Abbey Road
Producer: Paul McCartney
Engineers: Tony Clark, Alan Parsons

The second recording session by the still-unnamed Wings took place on 25 July 1971.

The main focus of the session was ‘Some People Never Know’, which Paul McCartney had written in 1969. He had taped a demo the following year, but it was not recorded during the Ram sessions.

The band recorded four takes after several rehearsals. Only the first and last attempt were complete, and featured McCartney on acoustic guitar, Denny Laine on bass guitar, and Denny Seiwell on drums.

McCartney then overdubbed harmonium and electric piano onto take four, Laine added more acoustic guitar, and Paul and Linda McCartney recorded lead and harmony vocals.

Afterwards, likely inspired by Fela Kuti’s concurrent sessions in Studio Three, the band recorded a jam known as ‘African Rhythms’. It featured various instruments from the Abbey Road collections: bongos, maracas, bells, and claves.
