Wings began recording their standalone single ‘Goodnight Tonight’ on 6 February 1978.
The band was without a drummer and second guitarist, and this was a solo Paul McCartney session. He filled two tape reels with versions of the song during this session.
McCartney began the recordings by laying down a drum machine track. The longest take, lasting 7:18, was judged to have the best beats, and he overdubbed acoustic drums and a wash of chords on a keyboard, following by bass guitar.
The recording also had acoustic guitar, hi-hat, two electric guitar parts, and guide vocals during the first verse and chorus.
McCartney made a number of rough mixes towards the end of the session, filling two more tape reels.
