The second round of auditions held by Wings to find a new drummer was held on 8 and 9 May 1974.
The band had auditioned 52 drummers on 29 and 30 April, from which a shortlist of five were invited to the second round: Geoff Britton, Roger Pope, Rob Townsend, Micky Waller, and David ‘Pick’ Withers.
These auditions were held at the Carousel Ballroom, later renamed the Electric Ballroom, in London’s Camden Town. Unlike the previous auditions, the drummers played with Wings. They mostly performed rock ‘n’ roll standards, although Paul McCartney tested them with a new composition involving several tempo and style changes, which became ‘Junior’s Farm’.
Geoff Britton and Rob Townsend were selected as the best of the five, and were each given a further day of playing with Wings before Britton was eventually invited to join the group.
