Television: James Paul McCartney

Filming for the television special James Paul McCartney continued on 22 March 1973.

This day saw the shoot relocate to the Chelsea Reach pub in New Brighton, Merseyside, for a singalong with Wings and the members of Paul McCartney’s family in Liverpool. They included his aunts Millie, Gin, and Joan, uncle Joe, and various cousins and friends. Also attending was Gerry Marsden of Gerry and the Pacemakers.

The four-hour shoot saw McCartney leading a singalong around the piano, with songs including ‘April Showers’, ‘It’s A Long Way To Tipperary’, ‘Nothing Could Be Finer Than To Be In Carolina’, and ‘Hey Jude’.

Afterwards, the McCartneys stayed at Paul’s father’s house, Rembrandt, while the other members of Wings returned to London.

That was horrible. Everybody was drunk – we’d spent the whole day there, sitting around, singing old songs, and drinking, mainly – hanging out in a pub getting blotto. Henry, Denny [Laine] and I were in a limo, going back to London, and the limo driver drove about two blocks, opened the window and threw up. I said to him, ‘Okay, you hop in the back here, I’m driving.’ That night, Denny and Henry got into it, sitting in the back, putting out cigarette butts in each other’s faces. It was the longest night of my life.
