Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr attend Mick Jagger’s wedding

Paul and Linda McCartney, and Ringo Starr and Maureen Starkey, attended the wedding of Mick Jagger to Bianca Pérez-Mora Macías on 12 May 1971.

All four Beatles had been invited, but John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and George Harrison failed to show.

The McCartneys were wary of attending, due to the fallout from Paul’s legal action to dissolve The Beatles’ business partnership, but were convinced to go by Jagger. They flew from Machrihanish Airport in Scotland to London Gatwick in the afternoon of 12 May.

Jagger had chartered a private jet, at the cost of £2,500, to take guests from Gatwick to Nice in France. At the departure lounge the McCartneys joined Ringo and Maureen before boarding the jet.

That was strange because we hadn’t seen each other for a year, but we both knew everything was okay. I’m not gonna… none of us are gonna punch each other, or anything like that. It was just like, we hadn’t seen him for a year, so it got like, ‘Hello,’ you know, and we had to get warm together.

Mick and Bianca Jagger's wedding, 12 May 1971

The civil ceremony took place at the city’s council chamber. It was followed by a Roman Catholic ceremony at the 17th century Chapelle Sainte-Anne in Ramatuelle, Saint-Tropez, France. Around 100 guests attended the wedding, including Chris Jagger, Keith Richards and Anita Pallenberg, Ronnie Wood, Eric Clapton, Eric Green, Ossie Clark, Jimmy Miller, Glyn Johns, Stephen Stills, Doris Troy, PP Arnold, Bobby Keys, Nicky Hopkins, members of The Small Faces, and Roger Vadim.

The main event was a party in a hall near the Café Des Arts, with music by reggae group Freddie Notes and the Rudies, and blues guitarist Terry Reid. Jagger also sang with soul singer Doris Troy.

The McCartneys stayed at the Byblos Hotel, and returned to Scotland the following day. They failed to pay their hotel bill, believing Jagger would cover it. The hotel sent the bill to the Rolling Stones.
