Studio R-2, A&R Recording, New York City
Producer: Paul McCartney
Engineer: Dixon Van Winkle
Paul McCartney worked on mixes for his song ‘Another Day’ on 8 February 1971.
The mixes were for a single release scheduled for later in the month. McCartney wanted the single to coincide with the beginning of his court case to dissolve The Beatles’ legal partnership, to mark his first offering as a solo artist.
Two reels were filled with stereo mixes, and three reels with mono ones. The studio speakers were Altec 604Es, which had less bass than McCartney was used to. As a result, he and studio engineer Dixon Van Winkle cranked up the bass in the mix.
After the session, around 100 acetate discs were cut at A&R and sent to New York radio stations. But when the song was played on air it had an overload of bass, leading to distortion. More mixes were made on 12 February.
