We’re a few weeks away from that dreaded anniversary.

I came across a Loudon Wainwright III song about his murder, and was looking for somewhere to put it.

Was surprised to find, despite searching, no dedicated thread existed to the songs that were recorded in tribute to John after his death. Yes, I know many are mentioned in the thread about songs with “Beatles references”, but they’re somewhat different to most of those.

I decided they deserved their own thread.

To kick off the thread we have the Loudon song I came across…

Yeah, I know. Not the best song to kick off the thread. Loudon said he wanted to write it like a folk song of old, just reportage, but Dylan destroyed that sort of old folk song when he wrote of Emmett Till, Medgar Evers and Hattie Carroll. Insight is needed, not just stating the facts, and there’s not a hint of insight here.

Great idea, Ron.

The Late Great Johnny Ace by Paul Simon.

One of my favourite tribute songs.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Bob Dylan song “Roll On John,” Mr. Nasty.

I'm Necko.  I'm like Ringo except I wear necklaces.

I'm also ewe2 on weekends.

Most likely to post things that make you go hmm... 2015, 2016, 2017.

I would have got there, Mr… Necko! Fascinating song. Bob has only written three “tribute” songs – Song to WoodyLenny Bruce and Roll On John. His elegy to John is almost unexpected, coming so long after the loss, but is probably the more beautiful for it.

The Late Great Johnny Ace by Paul Simon.

One of my favourite tribute songs.

You might find this interesting. Paul talks about the Central Park performance, plays the song, and reminisces about John (while getting many details wrong!).

And here’s an addition, Queen’s Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)

I often wonder if Freddie had heard John’s Real Love /Real Life/Girls and Boys  demos…

An alternate, devastating, acoustic version of the song you posted in another thread, @Ahhh Girl. According to Sean, it’s called Listen

I just found this song by David Gilmour, an expression of his anger over the senselessness of John’s

Lyrics under spoiler

Some of them standing, some were waiting in the line
As if there was something that they thought they might find
Taking some strength from the feelings that always were shared
And in the background, the eyes that just stared
What was it brought you out here in the dark?
Was it your only way of making your mark
Did you get rid of all the voices in your head?
Do you now miss them and the things that they said?
On your own admission you raised up the knife
And you brought it down ending another man’s life
When it was done you just threw down the blade
While the red blood spread wider like the anger you made
I don’t want this anger that’s burning in me
It’s something from which It’s So Hard to be free
But none of the tears that we cry in sorrow or rage
Can make any difference, or turn back the page

With @Ron Nasty’s approval, I’m cross-posting one of his posts to this thread.

Here’s the original post: https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..1/#p377920

Recorded on 9 December 1980 (42 years ago today) by Baxter, Baxter, and Baxter, written by Stephen Kilgore, Virginia Fielder, and B. Castleman, released within 48 hours in the US by Sun Records, this has to be the first record responding to John’s murder.

In their 10 December press release they said:

This record by Baxter, Baxter, and Baxter – “John” was recorded 12/9/80, but only after much discussion before we reached a decision. Myself, my staff, Baxter, Baxter, and Baxter, the musicians, the writers; we all agreed, let’s do it, but with love not a “tribute” or whatever you call songs about great men. We all did it with love.

Just listen with love.

Kind of fitting that it was released on the Sun label as there lay the beginnings of all that would inspire John and the other Beatles to do what they did.
