Alf Lennon dies

John Lennon’s father Alf died on 1 April 1976.

The two men had largely been estranged since 1970, and had last met on 9 October that year. By 1976 the elder Lennon had been diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer, and his wife Pauline contacted John via Apple Corps to let him know.

Lennon sent a bouquet of flowers to the hospital in Brighton, and telephoned his father on his deathbed, apologising for their earlier disagreements.
