Wings worked on the Wings At The Speed Of Sound song ‘Wino Junko’ on 21 January 1976.
Drummer Joe English was unwell, so the session involved the other four members.
The song’s introduction was recorded on this day. It had chimes, bells, and electric piano. Paul McCartney also sampled the phrase “till you go down again” in a Mellotron, which allowed him to play it at different pitches.
Unhappy with the results, he then switch to a vocoder. He recorded a 24-second spoken word message to English, explaining the audio effect he was seeking. He then recorded the vocal overdub for ‘Wino Junko’ using the vocoder.
Two unadorned vocal parts were then added. The first had Jimmy McCulloch and Denny Laine, and the second had the pair plus the McCartneys.
Denny Laine then re-recorded his lead vocals on ‘The Note You Never Wrote’, before mixes were made of both songs plus ‘Silly Love Songs’ and ‘Beware My Love’.
