Wings worked on the Venus And Mars song ‘Spirits Of Ancient Egypt’ on 18 February 1975.
This was the penultimate session for the song. Over this and the following day, Paul McCartney added Minimoog synth and lead guitar parts, Linda McCartney added synth strings, Joe English recorded a gong to open the song, and Alan O’Duffy taped the busy signal from a telephone line for the song’s close. The song was completed with the whole band and O’Duffy recording harmony vocals.
The guitar solo was played by McCartney using a Gizmotron, a device invented by 10cc’s Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, which attached to a guitar and bowed the strings to simulate the sound of orchestral string instruments.
