Recording: Medicine Jar by Wings

Studio Two, EMI Studios, London
Producer: Paul McCartney
Engineers: Geoff Emerick, Mark Vigars

Wings recorded the backing track for the Venus And Mars song ‘Medicine Jar’ on 13 November 1974.

This was the third consecutive day of work on the song. The band had recorded 41 takes over the previous two days, but the results were deemed insufficient.

This day’s session began at 2:30pm and ended at 2am the following morning. Wings recorded 15 new takes, only eight of which were complete. They had Jimmy McCulloch on guitar and guide vocals, Paul McCartney on bass guitar, Linda McCartney on organ, Denny Laine on guitar, and Geoff Britton on drums.

Take 15 became the basis of the album version. Towards the end of the session, Paul overdubbed an electric piano part, McCulloch added more guitar, Laine played congas, and Britton added cymbals and hi-hat. McCulloch then re-recorded his lead vocals, with harmonies added by the McCartneys and Laine.

‘Medicine Jar’ was completed with more overdubs in February and March 1975.
