Does anyone else get the sense of a methodical calculating machine or an old-timey accounting clerk making methodical tick marks in a ledger when listening to this song?
There is more to that than you think. I’ve been trying to find the source where I read this, but certain instruments were also used to accentuate certain sounds – the tambourine emulating a pocket full of change (versus dollars or pound notes) for example.

I just found George’s Live in Japan version of this song and
! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
He added verses and changed the names… the cheeky bugger but my, my, he was in fine fettle there, wasn’t he?
SUCH FABOSITY

I was listening to Revolver on Saturday, on my new ‘phones, and for the very first time ever, I heard the true count-in to this song, behind George’s sleepy mumbling and someone’s cough and other random noise; I only ever heard ‘Fooour’ vaguely before. My worldview has been rearranged.

He does it with Piggies too, where he adds a short new verse in Japan.

I’m going to need to blast this with my headphones now to see if I can hear what you are talking about.

@meanmistermustard
Are there any takes from ’68 with the extra verse? The small amount of complete Piggies takes do not have it, and the Anthology version does not have it either.

None. I think it was ditched early as it’s not part of the Esher demo.

Have we mentioned how unusual it was for a guitar solo to be looped and then used twice in a song? Are there any other Beatles tracks with pretaped instrumental parts used and re-used (not counting TNK and Revolution 9 ?)
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

They do that in I’m A Loser , don’t they? At least it sounds like the same one at the end.
And then there’s the fade-in of Eight Days A Week , on the same album… hmm…

I figured out the first phrase of the solo today. I don’t know whether to include the open D string with the G string in that fast opening burst though.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

This was taken during the Revolver sessions and i can’t think of a better fit.

Isn’t this the only song George used his Strat on? Unless he used it on And Your Bird Can Sing , which has quite a bright tone.

Don’t quote me on this but i think he used his Casino on And Your Bird Can Sing since the tone matches Paul’s guitar part. The rhythm guitar in Taxman is definitely a Strat, you can tell and I Want To Tell You also uses one as well as possibly some other songs.

@Dark Overlord You’re actually getting me very interested as to what was played on which track.
