Listened to both of Paul’s vocal tracks separated from each other and its quick incredible and surprising how loose Paul’ vocals are, especially the first live-in-the-studio vocal, considering its so powerful in the final recording. At times i’m expecting Paul to stop and throw in a half-hearted line – tho this is not to say its not good, its fantastic.
You can far more clearly hear the closeness in the vocal to the one Paul put in on take 2 on the Anthology discs, even tho that one is nowhere near as good.

Moving the conversation about CBL’s solo over here to the right thread, @50yearslate.
A couple of reasons why I don’t like it: so poorly double tracked (and the old solo’s leakage)
Doesn’t got the song imo. It’s a simple song, so a solo a la I Should Have Known Better would be better.
It feels like every line was an afterthought, not something Georgie thought about before playing (I know most early Beatles solos were improvised – but most sound like he’s thinking about what he’s playing/about to play)
That’s it, really.

I agree that the double tracking’s a mess, but I’m quite fond of the leakage. When I was little I thought it was intentionally added as a part of the solo, until several months ago when I looked it up and found that that was not the case. I really love the solo, though. But that’s just me.

Indeed! The inclusion of the leakage is maybe my favourite aspect of that whole solo bit, accident or not. George playing off himself gives it a new aspect, and makes the final solo more decisive.
Anyways, I rarely have criticism for any of these guys’ sonic experiments…

I think the solo is very cool, kinda sloppy and bluesy but i love it like that. And the leakage adds a different flavour… an extra of sloppiness that i adore.
I should have known better solo is so simple and boring…down there with I’ll Follow The Sun and All You Need Is Love …

You have a point but i like how the poor double tracking, especially the part of the solo where one track plays one note and the other track plays the next note.

And the old solo’s leakage
I’m not a big fan of 2 solos going on at the same time either but here it works nicely, it’s like the old solo compliments the new one.

It’s a 12 bar blues song, something that’s typically complimented with a bluesy pentatonic solo, so having a solo like that wouldn’t work here.

You just described the solo for Boys without even knowing it.
All joking aside, George did think this one out since if he truly didn’t care about the solo, he would’ve stuck with the original.
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

I would have difficulty finding a solo that I didn’t like. The solo on Not A Second Time is a little meh, but a. that’s not guitar and b. George doesn’t even play on the record.
Love one another.

I love this solo. This song is actually quite ambiguous tonally, a lot more advanced than your average 12-bar blues. The solo is more or less in C minor, against the backdrop of seventh chords, giving it a really authentic bluesy feel.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Does anyone know why Paul turned this into a bluegrass number for MTV in 1992? I love the completely different arrangement.
Makes me wonder what other songs he/other Beatles have changed the arrangement/instrumentation for when playing live after release (so no outtakes or going back and re-recording versions years later)? ‘Yesterday ‘ is easily the obvious example when the Beatles played it live in December 1965 (Paul solo on organ) and 1966 (full band electrified).

Boredom? I think most songwriter/artists fool around with their songs some as time goes on. This is a pretty extreme example of it though. Sounds good.
I’ve always thought Can’t Buy Me Love sounded a little rote anyway, it could use a little twist.

While painting boards for the trim on the building we are renovating, Ohhh Boy put on the Beatles 1 cd. This thought popped into my head while Can’t Buy Me Love was playing. This song could be sung by a person in a same-sex relationship without having to change any gender pronouns.

Great observation! Just off the top of my head, so does Love Me Do and From Me To You .
