John Lennon and Yoko Ono held a press conference on the morning of 28 April 1972.
It took place at the ballroom of the National Press Club in Washington, DC, and was organised by a group of friends of the couple acting as the National Committee for John and Yoko.
The press conference was ostensibly to shore up support for Lennon’s bid for permanent residency in the United States. The committee’s chair, Ken Dewey, said: “Our group has formed to make clear to those within the Justice Department’s INS, and within the present administration, that deportation, harassment, or intimidation of John Lennon and Yoko Ono is not in the public interest. We would like support from all others who agree.”
Following the event, Lennon and Ono attended a private fundraising party at the home of the Right Reverend Paul Moore, who had opened the press conference.
