Recording: If Not For You, The Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll), Behind That Locked Door by George Harrison

Studio Three, EMI Studios, Abbey Road
Producers: George Harrison, Phil Spector
Engineers: Phil McDonald, John Leckie

Friday 5 June 1970 was the eighth recording session for George Harrison’s third solo album All Things Must Pass.

Three songs were worked on during this session: ‘If Not For You’, ‘The Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)’, and ‘Behind That Locked Door’. Harrison had worked on the first two songs on the previous day.

The first song to be tackled was ‘If Not For You’, starting with take 9. The final attempt, take 18, became the album version.

‘The Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)’ was completed in six takes, numbered 3-8, the last of which was chosen as the best.

The day ended with 13 takes of ‘Behind That Locked Door’, four of which were complete. Take 13 appeared on the album, but no outtakes from this session were included on the super deluxe reissue of All Things Must Pass in August 2021.

This was the final album session worked on by Badfinger guitarists Pete Ham, Tom Evans, and Joey Molland. Shortly afterwards they left England for a Capitol Records Convention show in Honolulu, Hawaii, followed by a festival in Germany and a UK tour.
