Thursday 4 June 1970 was the seventh recording session for George Harrison’s third solo album All Things Must Pass.
Two songs were worked on during this session: ‘The Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)’ and ‘If Not For You’. Invited to this session was guitarist Peter Frampton, whom Harrison had met while working on Doris Troy’s self-titled second album.
He asked me would I come and play. That’s when I went in, and it was me, and then George to my right, and then to his right were the three Badfinger members.
Two takes of ‘The Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)’ were recorded, neither of which was complete. After the second Harrison said: “Earl Scruggs on banjo would do that good,” before vocalising a banjo part.
The musicians then moved on to ‘If Not For You’. Eight takes were recorded, but the results were deemed dissatisfactory. Both the day’s songs were re-recorded the following day.
Also worked on during this session was ‘I’d Have You Anytime’, which received its final overdubs.
