Fab Four FAQ 2.0 has a Facebook page that recognizes anniversaries of Beatle-related events. And today is a very sad one, that of John's mother's death. During the enusing discussion, the page posted a 1998 interview with the man who accidentally killed Julia, Eric Clague. His version of events goes against the story that's usually told (including here at the Bible) that Julia was killed by a drunk driver. It is revealed, however, that he had a learners permit and shouldn't have been driving alone.

He talks in the interview of how her death continued to haunt him. The article mentions how John was just building a relationship with his mother when she died, and it's a stark reminder of how Julian was rebuilding his relationship with John when he was killed. A very sad story for all involved.

Sorry, I know it's macabre, but I thought it might be of interest.

The 1998 article you link to, parlance, makes a fascinating read. It'll be interesting to see Lewisohn's account of Julia's death in a few months time. The writer of the article certainly throws a different light on the mythology, with his interview with the driver, and his access to the inquest report. Thanks for that.

You're welcome. I was wondering, too, if Lewisohn's account would include this information.

Speaking of Julia...can anyone tell me who bought John his first guitar. I've heard 2 versions: Julia ordered one for him and had it sent to her house so Mimi wouldn't know....and I've also heard Auntie Mimi bought him his first guitar. Anyone know which is true?

Julia bought him his first cheapo guitar, and Mimi bought him his first proper one.

Did anyone read the comment beneath the article from the woman who claimed to have seen the "ghost" of a car on Menlove Avenue and wondered if an accident happened there?

^ Yeah, I read that. It could be true, I suppose. I know people (who I know wouldn't just make it up) that have said that they've seen cars on the road that have just disappeared the next minute. It's strange, very strange.

I don't know if this guy is telling the truth, I mean, he's going to try and cover it up a bit, isn't he? Especially if he has felt as guilty as he says all these years. Or maybe it's because of that guilt that he's tried to remember it differently. Wasn't he supposed to be drink driving as well? I thought that was declared in the inquest. He could be telling the truth though, I suppose. Maybe Lewisohn will shed some light on this.

The inquest verdict was "misadventure". That would indicate that it was an accident and no individual was found at fault. As to the drink-driving aspect, and I've heard John say in interviews, "She was killed by a drunk driver" (paraphrase), if found to be true then the verdict would have different.

Just as much as the driver might want to make his part look less damning, those who had lost Julia might also have looked to make the driver look more at fault than he really was. The senselessness of an accident is sometimes hard to swallow.

That's very wise, and most probably very true. I wonder if we'll ever even know for sure.

Parlance - thanks for posting that. I'll have to change my account of Julia's death. I've got a lot of respect for RR - he's very diligent with his research (and a nice guy too). His Revolver book is a recommended read.

Please don't spoil my day; I'm miles away

Okay guys...I'm from the USA...I've never heard the story that someone has seen the "ghost" of a car on Menlove Avenue. (Insert look of amazement here!!) That fascinates me! What happens? It appears and disappears? I fully believe in things like that having had similar experiences on occasion. Remember John (and Yoko, too)deeply believed in the supernatural (Yoko's interest was/is almost bizarre). Anyway..here's my question...who would be driving the car? Julia? The killer (Eric Claque) is still alive! Maybe it is John. Remember, he tried all is life to contact Julia via seance. Definitely interesting! Thanks!
