In the studio
Starr’s version of ‘You Always Hurt The One You Love’ was recorded on 25 February 1970. The session took place at De Lane Lea’s studio in Soho, London, from 2-5.30pm, with a mixing session following from 5.30-7.30pm.
The recording was arranged by Johnny Dankworth, who also conducted a 20-piece orchestra on the recording.
Work on the song concluded at Abbey Road on 6 March 1970, the final recording session for Sentimental Journey. Saxophone, played by Dankworth, plus piano and drums were overdubbed onto the song, during the 10am-midday session.
Lyrics
You always hurt the one you love
The one you shouldn’t hurt at all
You always take the sweetest rose
And crush it until the petals fall
You always break the kindest heart
With a hasty word you can’t recall
So if I broke your heart last night
It’s because I love you most of all
You always break the kindest heart
With a hasty word you can’t recall
So if I broke your heart last night
It’s because I love you most of all
It’s because I love you most of all
