‘Down And Out’ was the b-side of Ringo Starr’s 1973 single ‘Photograph’.
The song, written by Starr, was likely to have been recorded in 1972 during the initial sessions for ‘Photograph’. It was likely completed with a horn section recorded by producer Richard Perry in Los Angeles in 1973.
‘Down And Out’ contains a slide guitar solo by Harrison and a piano solo by Gary Wright.
The release
‘Photograph’ was released as a single on 24 September 1973 in the USA, and 19 October in the UK. The b-side was ‘Down And Out’.
‘Photograph’ was a smash hit, topping the singles charts in Australia, Canada, and the USA. In the UK it peaked at number 8, and it was a top 10 hit in Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Switzerland, and West Germany.
In 1991 the Ringo album was released on compact disc with three bonus tracks: ‘Down And Out’, ‘It Don’t Come Easy’, and ‘Early 1970’.
