I don’t know what people think, I wonder if this isn’t where John found the Hey Bulldog riff. It’s a 1967 Lee Dorsey song, Get Out of My Life, Woman .
Personally I’d bet money the source was Henry Mancini’s Peter Gunn theme, with the famous baritone guitar played by Duane Eddy. Others have made the same connection too. And the Beatles clearly didn’t consider themselves above biting a TV theme, viz. “Taxman “!

I considered doing that, but then I thought I might get confused and think I was listening to an episode of @Into the Sky with Diamonds’s radio show.
When I heard the song the other day, I said to myself “Hey, they’re singing ITSWD’s song.” Duh, Ahhh Girl’s brain. He uses their song. I wonder what made me be so loopy that day.

When my phone could get music on it i’d use ‘You Wont See Me’ for the opening “when I call you up, you’re lines engaged” as I never pay attention to the damn thing (coming from the callers perspective).

Don’t you love Faul’s enthusiasm on the drums, @Mademoiselle Kitty? That new kid had some big talent. “They” chose him well.

You could say he hit the ground running. Got on swimmingly with John, too. Such luck, finding that bloke on such short notice.

How would you guys like a poll. When most people think of debated who did what Beatles topics, they often think of the ahhhs in A Day In The Life which according to Geoff Emmerick were by John although some believe that they were by Paul. Another debated topic is who played the solo on Hey Bulldog , some say that it’s John, others say George, and I’ve even heard some say Paul.
Poll time:
[sp_show_poll id=”192″]
I personally think that it’s George because I don’t think John had it in him to make that great of a solo and also Geoff Emmerick states that it’s George and although he’s often labeled as unreliable, he was there. Also, the guitar style seems to sound more like George to me than John’s choppy lead playing.

When people ask, “What’s your favorite Beatle song?” I answer “Hey Bulldog “
First, it throws them off.
Secondy, it’s a great team effort between the four of them.
Thirdly, it’s the theme to my radio show (beatles and friends radio)
I never realized there was controversy about who plays lead guitar. I’m going to go with George as my guess. (There is a video of that recording session [frequently taken down], and there’s no Paul playing lead. Then again, I’m not sure there’s any Paul playing bass, and he sure as heck played the bass line!)

One of my all time favourite Beatles songs. As for who played the lead guitar I would say it is George but who knows with the Beatles?
I never knew there was uncertainty with who played lead.

Well, it’s a bit choppy, and very aggressive: Exactly John’s style. I’ve got no proof, but it sounds 100% to me like john’s style of playing lead guitar.

I think its George because of the way he takes the melody and runs with it in ways unique to his playing style. Although it has a very Johnish feel to it I will admit.

Things To Love About The Beatles Item #1,254: that they knew each other so intimately that they could imitate each other’s styles so effectively that hardcore Beatlemaniacs could spend the next five decades arguing about who played what.
Irritating Things About The Beatles Item #12: that they didn’t keep better records of who played what!

It’s funny you mention #12 because we have a great record of who played what on this song, except for the solo, due to the fact that unlike most songs, they actually filmed the recording sessions, so we know that it’s John on lead vocals, piano, and his Epiphone Casino in the state where it’s pickguard is removed but the sunburst finish is still there, Paul’s on Rickenbacker bass, backing vocals, and tambourine, George’s playing his Gibson SG, and Ringo’s playing drums and says yeah at one point during the verses. It’s just the solo that’s a mystery.
