Maybe it was a database blip. Hopefully it’s working OK now, but if it persists do let me know.

It looks a lot better in the profile area now. I can actually see my signature as a whole sentence.

Edit: Smile test

🙂 🙂

Smile test failed. 🙁

But they have their own kind of old school charm, don’t you think? 😉

One Idea I have, you may already have it but I haven’t seen it is list what model of amps, guitars, bass, drums, piano were played on each song. Some people probably don’t really care, but for people like myself really interested in musical instruments, it would be pretty interesting to us. From playing Beatles rockband, I can tell what instruments were used for around 50 of the songs, but the rest? Thanks cool

This is an area that fascinates me (which is one of the reasons I bought the Everett books). I know Everett can’t be classed as 100% accurate but I’m sure he’s almost there.

Joe, I’d be happy to troll some pages for some of the info if it would help in collating such detail?

I’ll be adding this info in time. I’d like to include instrument details on every song article.

I wouldn’t use Rock Band as a reliable source – there’s a lot of artistic licence in there. I’ve got some good sources (Everett, Andy Babiuk’s excellent Beatles Gear book, and this site: http://www.thecanteen.com/fabg…..itars.html), and I’ll try and pull together a proper list of what instruments were used and where. I’m not sure of the format – I’ll probably create a separate gear section, and divide it up into each band member, going through what they played chronologically.

Fortunately The Beatles used a fairly small range of instruments; certainly during the earlier years most of their recordings fewer than a dozen or so instruments.

MJB – thanks for the offer. Editing all the existing articles is what would take the most amount of time, and I can’t really get any help on that. However, if you or anyone else has definitive, reliable info on instruments used, please add them as comments to the song articles and I’ll update them.

I’m really sorry about that. It was set to 100k. I’ve increased this to 500k, which should be enough for a 100x100px image (I’ve set a width/height restriction because I don’t want massive pictures all over the site, but I can increase it a little if people would prefer).

I’ve also enabled the option to link to images hosted elsewhere, but I haven’t tried it myself. If you see a picture on another site and would like to have it as your avatar, copy the url/location (will most likely end in .jpg or .gif) and paste it into your profile settings. Don’t paste in urls that end in .html – it won’t work.

OK, because I love you all, and because there seems to have been some avatar problems, I’ve uploaded some new smileys – John, Paul, George and Ringo!

a-hard-days-night-john-1a-hard-days-night-paul-1a-hard-days-night-george-1a-hard-days-night-ringo-2

I’ll try and make a few more, but if anyone wants to send me some (35x35px max, transparent gifs preferred) I’ll add them.

Lastly, I know they’re in a weird order. Apparently the option to reorder them is coming in a future release of the forum software. It’ll do for now.

EDIT I’m considering deleting the yellow smileys and having purely Beatles ones – it seems more in-keeping with the point of all this. What do people think? Yellow smileys removed. Might leave some things broken, but it’ll be worth it in the long run.

Sounds like a great idea. If you could do it so : ) [without the space in between] would automatically turn into Ringo smiling or something that would be cool. Some of the expressions are hard to tell when they’re really small but after a while you’d get used to them. I think using all the Hard Day’s Night faces would be fab.

What I’ll do is sit with Mr Everett’s book and maybe do one albums worth in the comments (Revolver or Pepper) and see what you and other’s think?

I still can’t get my avatar to work. It says it’s saved but it just stays as the back of George’s head. The avatar I had before wasn’t too big, but it’s over 400 pixels wide so it’s too big now. I think the max size should be increased a small amount. I had no trouble with the loading speed previously.

Have a look at this post: https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..peed/#p170

I think you need to resave your profile after the avatar is uploaded. Try that; if it doesn’t work I’ll take a closer look.

MJB – that would be fantastic, if you have the time. I’ll work on a separate set of articles about each of the instruments, which will feed into the gear section.

More smileys added. You can see them here: a-hard-days-night-john-1a-hard-days-night-john-2a-hard-days-night-john-3a-hard-days-night-john-4a-hard-days-night-john-5a-hard-days-night-paul-1a-hard-days-night-paul-2a-hard-days-night-paul-3a-hard-days-night-paul-4a-hard-days-night-paul-5a-hard-days-night-george-1a-hard-days-night-george-2a-hard-days-night-george-3a-hard-days-night-george-4a-hard-days-night-ringo-2a-hard-days-night-ringo-4a-hard-days-night-ringo-5

There are a few more to add, from the rear of the United Artists (US) version. I’ll do those now.

Anyone got a big version of this image?

Image Enlarger

It’d be good to get old Wilfrid Brambell in there.

As for codes such as :), I can do this, but I could do with suggestions. So please, if you think any of these headshots lend themselves to any emoticons in partiular, eg 🙂 :p :(, do say. At the moment they follow the pattern : ahdnr1 : (without the spaces before and after the colons) – where r is for Ringo, and 1 is smiley 1.

Sorry Joe, still can’t get an avatar to work. It works for really small pictures but for slightly larger ones it says it’s worked but doesn’t do anything even when I save it several times. I don’t have any small Beatles-related pictures. 100 pixels is tiny and bad quality, surely other people are using pictures with better resolution than that.

I did have a larger copy of that poster which I scanned from an old magazine. I don’t think it’s saved on my computer anymore. I could scan it again if you like.

EDIT The problem with deleting the old smilies is that all the posts previously containing smilies now contain question mark boxes in their place.

100 pixels is fine – it’s not a quality issue here. Larger images should be rescaled (as your current one is, from 125px). I don’t want to have much larger ones than that because it would push the width of the forum further out. The most I’d be willing to go to is 125px.

The joe2 avatar here is around 500 pixels square, but resized automatically to 100×100. It’s about 150k in size. What’s the size (in kb) of the one you’re trying to upload? As I said before, if it’s over 500k you’ll have problems, as that’s the current file limit. It should be enough, though, for an avatar pic.

If it’s unrelated to file size I’ll see what else I can do.

Yeah, sorry about the old smileys. Can’t really be helped unless I keep the old ones a-hard-days-night-paul-1

Don’t worry about that AHDN poster, though thanks for offering to rescan it. I think we’ve probably got enough smileys for now…
